Bottled Water Contamination Discussion

I keep a bottle of water at me bedside during the night. This morning I woke up and it looked off colour. I noticed there was a white "thing" floating inside the bottle.

I wanted to know what the white thing was. I drained the bottle and isolated the white thing on a paper towel. It was soft to the touch. No odour. I gently prodded it and it appears there are white eggs inside the white sac. First time this has ever happened to me thank heavens.

Called the distributor and was given a case number and the advice not to take it to the store because of its unknown origin. It is currently in the garage fridge in case the eggs hatch. I also kept the bottle (should not have drained it in hindsight).

Has anyone else experienced this? I am really grossed out and hope I did not drink something harmful.

Not to me. Eeeek. I’m sure you’re ok but that is so weird.

Something most people don't know about bottled water:

In the US, bottled water is regulated by the FDA.

Tap water is regulated by the EPA.

The EPA's standards are much higher than the FDA's.

Of course, this probably doesn't apply to Winnipeg, but every time I see people drinking bottled water because they think it's better for them, I want to scream.

I just use one of those britta filters and a huge Stanley waterbottle and I'm good to go for the day.

bottled water has a weird taste to me, and that's without gross white egg sacs contaminating it (at least to my knowledge!) 🤮🤮

IME, they are all different depending on where the water comes from and how much filtering they use.

In general, I find bottled water to taste better than the tap water in most places and way better in others. It's convenient too.

But if I am in a position where I will be drinking lots of water, I just bring a water bottle and refill it since the tap water around here isn't particularly bad, not like other places I've been to.

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) has very good water, but storms like yesterday’s can throw things off for a few days. In our state, tap outperforms most bottled waters.

I prefer my tap water. It tastes decent enough, it’s been tested, and I keep a pitcher with a filter in the fridge.

That said, I always keep a case of water around. I’m on well water so we have no water if we lose our electric. Bottled water allows us water to drink, fill dog/cat bowls, or even brush our teeth. Generally power isn’t out too long (6-8 hours the other day), but having water was very helpful.

Real Canadian Natural SPring Water in the 500 ml size, sold at Loblaws, Superstores, etc
Just saw this now. Here is an article from 2019 that might interest you:

I think in the end its the same here in Canada as Prancer mentioned in the US. Just drink tap water :)

And then there is this from 2022 which seems to match the size of bottle you had and the location although they are not clear about the brand:

eta.. I clearly have time on my hands and bottled water interests me ;)

did you ever read Bottlemania by Elizabeth Royte? it's at least 10 years old but it is really interesting and kind of shocking to me in parts.
