I came across this on the ISI website, in the section on rule revisions for competitions in 2024 through 2026. https://www.skateisi.org/programs/rule-revisions/

Costumes, props, themes, song lyrics, and choreography for all ISI competition programs should be family-friendly and suitable for viewing by skaters of all ages. Family- friendly implies that the content or experience is free from explicit or inappropriate material. Program content should prioritize values such as safety (non-violence), inclusivity, and entertainment that all ages can share and enjoy.

It's worded as "should" rather than "must" but I'd be interested to know what led to the decision to make this statement. It seems like a good idea nonetheless.

I would assume this is to save them the headache of trying to figure out what people find family friendly.

That is, putting "should" likely gives them more latitude to allow things people have complained about than "must." That is, if they put "must" I feel like they would have to be much more clear about what is/isn't allowed. Putting "should" gives them latitude to take things as they come - for instance, ISI would probably find a drag program (or LGBT themed program) fine. Not all parents will find that fine.

@Willin I agree, but I was also wondering what made ISI think it needed this kind of this policy on the books at all.

ISI is big in Asia, too:
Ice Skating Institute Asia (ISIAsia) is an Asian industry trade association encompassing owners and operators of ice skating facilities. Founded in 1999 as a non-profit organization, ISIAsia creates a platform to the Asian ice skating facilities to obtain industry information and to encourage the participation in ice skating as a recreational sport.Through the use of the America’s original learn-to-skate program, which was created by the Ice Skating Institute (ISI), we have introduced the wonderful world of ice skating to millions of public. The ISI Ice Skating program which was developed in 1961 has established over 100 different tests for skaters of all ages and ability levels in every aspects of skating which include Solo Skating, Ice Dancing, Pair Skating, Couple Skating, School Figures, Synchronize Skating and Ice Hockey.

Who or what is ISI? I don't know that acronym, I only know ISU.
They are an organization that promotes recreational skating. They have tests and competitions but since it's not on the Olympic track, everything tends to be more mellow/less toxic. I also believe that rinks can be members. So rinks join and use their learn to skate program instead of USFS (in the US).

My first skating competition was an ISI one. Though they were called ISIA then.
