Papadakis/Cizeron Officially Retire

Today (Nov. 3, 2024) they made it official that they have ended their competitive career and are going their separate ways:

@FSWer Papadakis is 29 and Cizeron turned 30 last month. No, they did not meet their goals. They only won the Olympics and won the world championships five times.

is there something about how ice dancing partnerships are treated in france that the partners rarely seem to be friends with each other off ice? i remember that delobel and schoenfelder were rumored to actively dislike each other during their career together. although, i was new to ice dancing when annisina and peizerat were still competing and don't remember what their relationship was like and then stopped watching skating altogether while pechalat and bourzat were competing for medals so maybe it's just d/s and p/c that were not on good terms (of the top teams)

With the news, someone on reddit posted this throwback from Euros 2016. P&C's early career still sticks with me as magic, but I hadn't watched back these programs in the last few years. I'm almost glad - it was an opportunity to be struck all over again. What a career they shared with us. This isn't even my favourite program of theirs, but it's one in a number of wonderful moments I'm grateful for.

And while a fair bit of it may involve recent shenanigans... it's seemed as if Guillaume built his "home" Montreal, while Gabby may not have. They struck me a bit like Meagan and Eric, who grew apart bit by bit for years before the end.

From what I see on their social media, it is the other way around: Gaby in Montreal and Guillaume in France.

Guillaume is occasionally in France, for instance for shows like the one he did recently at Vaulx le Vicomte castle, but he lives in Montréal where he has permanent residency. I don't think it has changed.

in case you haven't seen it yet, gabi has posted her personal statement about her retirement last night on instagram. i know she's talked a lot about taking up journaling regularly the last couple of years. the effects are evident in this statement.

This reminds me: Did you guys know that ABBA never officially retired? Just like many figure skaters, they never announced "We are retired!" This is probably good because recently they did that virtual concert thing and even released new music. Didn't Michelle Kwan never officially retire? Maybe she'll come back and go to the Olympics 40 years after 2002.
