At Kinki Regionals, the most significant achievement, jump wise, was in Novice A Ladies.
Mao Shimada nailed (positive GOE from JPN judges) quad toe loop!
Considering that top five in Juniors were also from Kinoshita Academy, Ms Hamada must be teaching them something right.
Junior Bronze Medalist, Hana Yoshida has been the most consistent 3A jumper in JPN for 2 seasons, even better than Rika. Hana needs to stop popping 3flip in the SP. With 3A/3T and 3A (both positive GOE) in the Free, IMHO, she is competitive with the best in the World.

Thanks, @Tak! I didn't check the Novice A protocols ;). I will post a few more links to Japanese articles on Shimada's 4T, Yoshida's 3As, etc. in the Japanese news thread in GSD (like I just did for Kagiyama's 4Lo attempt).

Mao Shimada's Novice A FS protocol (120.83 points!): https://www.jsfresults.com/National/2021-2022/fs_e/block5/data0605.pdf
Jumps landed: 4T (9.5 BV + 1.90 GOE = 11.40 points), 3Lz+3T, 3F, 3Lo, 2A+3T+2T. 3Lz.

ETA that Mana Kawabe landed a clean 3A in her Kinki Regional Senior SP (and 3F but fell on 3Lz+3T and placed 2nd to Sakamoto): https://www.jsfresults.com/National/2021-2022/fs_e/block5/data0203.pdf

Just this weekend, the best female jumper in JPN was competing at Japan Novice Championships.
Mao Shimada (12) nailed her 4T again and won handily the Novice A Ladies with 120+ points. The top 5 in Novice A Ladies were given an invitation to compete at Junior Nationals.
It is noted that Novice Dance was won by Sumire Yoshida and Ibuki Ogawara. Although Sumire is only 10, this team has been together longer than any Senior Dance Teams currently competing in JPN.
I have to wait another two weeks before Fuji TV is going to show edited coverage of this event.

East Japan Sectionals were held this weekend.
In Senior Women, the most surprising result was Marin Honda coming in 5th and getting the ticket for Nationals.
The Skaters going to Nationals are: Yuna Aoki(2nd), Akari Matsubara (3rd), Tomoe Kawabata (4th), Marin Honda (5th) and Ibuki Sato(6th).
The winner, Rinka Watanabe, is going to represent JPN at Universiade. Current JPN quarantine rules preclude her from competing at Nationals. If these rules are relaxed, then she will also compete at Nationals.
Marin Honda, in her interview, thanked behind the scenes coaching by her current coach's (Mr Nobuo Sato) star pupil, Mao Asada, for her successful comeback!

Since so many Seniors are busy with GPS and given "Byes to the Nationals", the most nail biting discipline is Junior Women.
Hana Yoshida: Bronze at Kinki; the best 3Ax jumper in Japan, has she fixed the unfortunate tendency to mess up SPs.
Ikura Kushida: Winner of Kinki Regional; Just like Yukari Nakano 20 years ago, the "threat" of being forced into Pairs seems have ignited her competitive fire for singles.
Ayumi Shibayama: Silver at Kinki; seems to have become 4-6 inches taller since last year. Best complete package with high beam smile.
They will go head to head with Azusa Tanaka, Sakurako Daimon (both from Kinoshita), Kinayu Yokoi (Yuhana's kid sister) and Maria Egawa at West Japan Sectional.
At the Junior Nationals, East Japan Junior Queen Rion Sumiyoshi (reputedly 4T ready) will challenge them. But the toughest competition will be from Mao Shimada (4T ready) and Kaoruko Wada from Novice A.

Junior Women SP produced unexpected results. Based on protocols since I have not seen the performances, the rankings were as follows.
1. Azusa Tanaka 65.86
2. Ayumi Shibayama 64.36
3. Ikura Kushida 62.45
4. Sakurako Daimon 59.65
5. Maria Egawa 57.30 (-1 for fall on 2Ax)
6. Kinayu Yokoi 55.84
7. Hana Yoshida 55.44 (-1 for fall on 3F)
Hana received 3Lzq+3T which was bad but only a minor deduction compared with, horror of horrors, Downgraded 3F (fall) with !.
The judging panel here utilized PCS scores to rank skaters. Azusa received highest PCS, which based on what I saw in Kinki Regionals, is well deserved. Azusa is not as consistent as Ikura or Ayumi in jumps, so anything could happen in tomorrow's Free. Also hoping Hana comes back strong.
Congratulations to Nana Araki the Senior Women Winner.
Silver went to Yuna Shiraiwa and Bronze to Mako Yamashita.

Junior Women concluded with nail biting finish.
1. Ayumi Shibayama 177.70
2. Ikura Kushida 175.77
3. Azusa Tanaka 174.28
4. Maria Egawa 164.34
5. Sakurako Daimon 162.88
6. Hana Yoshida 162.71
Ayumi won in spite of 2.0 Deduction, due to fall on 3S and costume penalty (Her hair ornament fell on the ice). Just one ! on 3Lz.
Ikura was clean except two ! on 3Lzs and two q.
Congratulations to the medalists!
Hana Yoshida actually landed one 3Ax with positive GOE, but seems to have had severe problems with other jumps.
The real problem for JSF is choosing JPN representative for JGPF, particularly women. Almost everyone thought Hana will go, but with her poor showings recently, things are getting murky..since none of the current top Junior skaters have the required TES minimum.

Ouch to see Nitaya that low.
She had that great farewell skate 2 seasons ago at nationals and then suddenly changed her mind and stayed.
A shame that move did not work out the way she hoped for (I suppose) :(

Sure thing! "Seeded skater" is not counted but "Exempted skater" is counted within the number of advancing skaters.
East Japan Sectional
Sr Men: 7 (including one exempted skater), 2 seeded skater so, 6 non exempted or seeded skaters advance
Sr Women: 6 (including one exempted skater), 1 seeded skater, 5 non exempted or seeded skaters advance
Jr Men: 8, 1 seeded skater, 8 non seeded skaters advance
Jr Women: 10 (no seeds or exempt skaters)
West Japan
Sr Men: 14 (including 5 exempted), 1 seeded skater so, 9 non exempted or seeded skaters advance
Sr. Women: 15 (including 4 exempted), 2 seeded skaters so, 11 non exempted or seeded skaters advance
Jr Men: 17 (no seeds or exemptions)
Jr Women: 14, 2 seeded skaters, so 14 non seeded skaters advance
Hope this helps.

So, 21 skaters in both Sr Men and Sr Women. Do the top 3 Jr Men and Jr Women at Jr Nationals get invited to Sr Nationals to make 24 skaters in each discipline?

Since "Seeded Skaters" (AKA previous national medalists) advance to Nationals, that makes the total to around 24. Furthermore, top Juniors (varies at around 4-6) get "Invitation to Participate at Senior Nationals". So, 28-30 would be the number of Senior National Singles participants.
JSF has allowed Novice level skater to participate in Senior Nationals only once, 02-03 Nationals, and the invited skater was Mao Asada. JSF also tried to get 11 year old Midori to participate in Senior Event, 1980 NHK, 40 years ago. I am hoping Mao Shimada would be allowed to participate in this year's Senior Nationals as "Mao Shimadovskaya", the simulated Russian competitor.

Junior Nationals started. Fuji TV will broadcast their coverage on Tuesday, a National Holiday.
In Women, SP ranking of the top six was;
1. Rion Sumiyoshi 65.34 36.22 29.12
2. Azusa Tanaka 62.56 34.68 27.88
3. Hana Yoshida 62.48 36.28 26.20
4. Mao Shimada 61.76 36.84 24.92
5. Ayumi Shibayama 60.17 35.69 24.48
6. Sakurako Daimon 59.95 33.91 26.04
Judging panel used PCS scores very effectively to rank the skaters. Based on East and West Japan performances, I think these PCS scores are reasonable except Ayumi for whom it seems too low. It is nice to see Hana doing well here, after series of bad skates. 23rd and almost the last placed to make it to the Free was Kinayu Yokoi. It seems that messing up the SP is fast becoming Yokoi family tradition.
In Mens, after the SP,
1. Tsuboi 81.05
2. Yoshioka 68.55
3. Kataise 67.99 (-1.0 Deduction, probably a fall)
Surprisingly, Kao Miura singled the Axel and was 7th at 64.00.

Junior Men concluded.
In the Free, the top 5 placements were;
1. Kao Miura 165.28 90.68 75.66 (-1.0 Fall)
2. Tatsuya Tsuboi 146.55 77.25 69.30
3. Nozomu Yoshioka 123.25 65.25 58.00
4. Takeru Kataise 120.38 54.38 66.00
5. Kosho Oshima 118.55 55.85 62.70
Kao must have watched Yuma performance in Italy! Coming back to win from 7th in the SP is uncommon.
Kao's jump elements scored, 3A (+3.20), 4S(+3.49), 4T+3T(+3.42), 3A+2T(+1.80), 4T< fall(-3.80), 2A+Eu+3F (+1.38), 3Lo (+1.08). High positive GOEs made the difference in the end. Tsuboi also had a solid skate with two clean 3A and one 4S (Negative GOE).
Total Scores were
1. Kao Miura 229.28
2. Tatsuya Tsuboi 227.60
3. Yoshioka 191.80
4. Kataise 188.37
5. Oshima 183.86

Junior Women just concluded. Congratulations to Mao Shimada, the new National Junior Queen!
FS Scores were;
1. Mao Shimada 126.75 76.03 50.72
2. Mone Chiba 116.44 63.64 52.80
3. Rion Sumiyoshi 114.91 56.51 58.40
4. Hana Yoshida 110.07 58.15 51.92
5. Azusa Tanaka 109.06 54.74 54.32
6. Ami Nakai 108.98 63.26 46.72 (-1.00)
7. Ikura Kushida 107.74 61.18 46.56
8. Ayumi Shibayama 106.51 58.63 48.88 (-1.00)
Mao's jump elements were, 4T, 3Lz+3T, 3F, 3Lo, 2A+Eu+3S, 2A+3T, 3Lz, all with +GOE and zero edge or under rotational calls. This kind of clean protocol reminds me of young Rika when she was on fire. Yoshida did one 3A (+1.28) and Ami Nakai also tried one but was < and fell.
Total scores were:
1. Mao Shimada 188.51
2. Rion Sumiyoshi 180.25
3. Mone Chiba 175.41
4. Hana Yoshida 172.55
5. Azusa Tanaka 171.65
6. Ayumi Shibayama 166.68
7. Ami Nakai 165.76
8. Ikura Kushida 165.09

Thanks for the timely updates, @Tak! :respec:

A Mao Shimada article:
Machine translation:
The 13-year-old Mao Shimada (Kinoshita Academy), the all-Japan queen of Novice, who is one category below, achieved her first victory in the "skipping class". It is the first time in 27 years since Shizuka Arakawa (1st year of junior high school at that time) won the junior title in the Novice age. Succeeded in the only Japanese girl's quadruple toe loop that can jump, and recorded 126.75 points in the free top. With a total of 188.51 points, he reversed from 4th place in the short program (SP).

Results/protocols in English are published online now: https://www.jsfresults.com/National/2021-2022/fs_e/national_jr/index.htm

Jack Gallagher's recap of Junior Nationals:
Excerpts:
Miura opened with a beautiful triple axel, then followed it with a strong quad salchow and a huge quad toe loop/triple toe loop combination. He received a lengthy standing ovation from the crowd at Nippon Gaishi Arena as he finished his program to a selection of songs by Vicente Amigo.
Though Miura fell on a quad toe loop later in the program, and received just level threes on two of his spins and step sequence, his jumping prowess was still enough to carry him to the top of the podium.
Miura’s free skate score was a titanic 165.28, and he burst into tears when the tally was posted on the video board.
“[After the short program] I was so worried that it was useless to have been there for a year,” Miura stated. “But I was relieved to be able to perform well for the free, and I felt relieved from my anxiety.”
Shimada opened her free skate to “Queen’s Gambit” with five jumps, landing them all with flair. She began with a fine quad toe loop, then hit a triple lutz/triple toe loop combo, followed by a triple flip and a triple loop.
Shimada received level fours on her spins and a level three on her step sequence.
“I’m glad, I didn’t think I could win the championship,” Shimada stated. “I want to improve my expressiveness and skating to improve the PCS (Program Component Scores). I want to put in two quads from next year, first two quad toe loops.”

What is noteworthy about Mao Shimada's win, is the deafening silence from understandably perplexed JSF.
Nothing about "Invited Skaters to Senior Nationals" nor "JPN Representatives to Junior Worlds" has been announced, so far.
It is noted that JPN Junior age eligible women skaters currently competing in Seniors, all feature 3F as independent triple in the SP, which is necessary under current Junior requirements.
