I really enjoy watching this team. They have great skating skills, and are so lovely to watch. What an amazing story how they hooked up in 2012 and rose to the top so quickly as juniors. A match made in heaven when that happens. :cheer:

They were in fourth after the SD at NHK, and likely would have finished in fourth had not Coomes and Buckland faltered in the FD. However, kudos to Kaitlin and Jean-Luc for skating so beautifully and thus putting themselves in a great position to medal (ultimately winning bronze)! They have really improved noticeably with both programs as this season has progressed. I'm excited to watch their development under Krylova and Camerlengo.

Nicky Slater commentated their FD on British Eurosport. At the end of their performance, Slater talks about how great their official website is, so I'm including a link, along with their FD video. Listen to what Slater says at the end of their FD. His mother, Joan Slater, used to train Jean-Luc's mother, Sharon Jones Baker, an ice dancer for Britain with Paul Askham. What a small world is figure skating! :)

Jean-Luc's dad, Stephen Baker, was a British pairs skater (he skated at the 1976 World Championships). Wikipedia says Jean-Luc was born in England, and his family moved to Washington state when he was four. Jean-Luc has a black belt in taekwondo! His expertise in that martial art must be quite helpful with balance, coordination, confidence, and movement quality on the ice. Of course, in addition to his having skated most of his life, and also the fact he and Kaitlin train with ballet.

Kaitlin was born in Buffalo, New York. She is interested in studying neuroscience. She has two hockey-playing brothers.

I like the quotes on their site, especially: "Champions are dreamers who never gave up."

Re-posting from the original H/B cheer thread (started in 2013, now with outdated title, so good idea to start a new one :)):
I wanted ... to congratulate Kaitlin and Jean-Luc to their first Senior Grand Prix Medal. :biggrinbo

Oh and his former partner Joylyn Yang congratulated him on twitter (she had to stop skating because of an injury) https://twitter.com/joylynyang/status/538912728295825410

I`m so excited for this pair and can`t wait to see how they will do at US Nationals. Getting a medal in their first senior year is amazing and something not even Davis/White achieved. I know,I know it`s different times now and the Brits fell, but it`s still amazing. :D

Thanks Sylvia. I have trouble finding threads when they fall off the first several pages. It must not have been too far off though, with the above having been posted there. Thanks for re-posting Marta24's message here. I was going to look for that thread, which I originally started after I first saw them as juniors, but I thought I would have a hard time finding it. :)

It might be a good idea if the admins would consider setting up a separate location for all the fan cheer threads. Thanks again.

ETA: I appreciate that correction re Jean-Luc's Dad's skating career. It was not clear/ correct on Wiki.

Okay, I found the original H/B thread. Here's the link:

Very impressed by this partnership. The FD is a great vehicle for them. I would not be surprised to see them battling for the bronze at US Nationals with Hubbell/Donahue, and leapfrogging Aldridge/Eaton and Cannuscio/McManus entirely. IMO, Jean-Luc Baker is one of the best male ice dancers currently competing for the USA. Hawayek, who's still quite young (barely 18), is rapidly improving. Doing a great job of transitioning from Juniors onto the Senior dance circuit. :cheer2:

I see them making the world team. I don't think the U.S sees Hubbel & Donohue (despite that I like them a lot) as part of their future. They will bump the upstarts over them and get them some world experience immediately. Aldridge & Eaton wont be even close in Nationals scores I bet, unlike their grand prix meetings.

Kaitlin and JLB are a very, very promising team, and I just love their FD this year. The new R&J soundtrack was a lovely choice for them (I'm pretty blah on their SD, just because it's so not their style). They already have a pretty clear identity and style, and their team has done well to capitalize on those strengths. Very excited about their future...

You know I agree with that @kwanette I love this couple, and although their FD this similar in feel to last year, it is lovely, just what I love, and was very well skated at NHK.

I think you're probably right on this one. Winning bronze at NHK has positioned H/B pretty well. I think if they deliver two solid programs at Nationals, they'll make the team for Worlds. The USFS will want to start grooming them for 2018 and the quad beyond. It would be great for such a young team to have senior Worlds experience as soon as possible.

^ Agreed. They have the potential to pass up existing teams right now, and by the end of this quad could really be strong contenders if they continue to improve and deliver such lovely programs. I'm really going to enjoy watching them develop as seniors- wishing them only the best!

As I reflect upon 2014 I realize how blessed I am. A year full of truly great experiences and accomplishments, from winning nationals in Boston, to becoming Jr. World Champions with@jeanlucbaker to getting my drivers license and starting college and capping it off with a medal on our first Grand Prix season. It has been a year full of exciting adventures and I am so lucky to have the family and friends I do on this wonderful journey with me- thank you all for being a part of it! There aren't enough words to express my gratitude, love and appreciation for all of you! Here's to making 2015 a year full of many more memories and happiness! ā¤ļø

Their skating makes you remember them, even if they arent necessarily really memorable, they have a really rare talent that I can't explain but it makes me really drawn into their skating.

They aren't really amazing at anything, but I think everything they do is very believable and there's a great attention to the flow and transitions of their programs and how things gel with the next. It makes their programs feel like they go by really quickly in comparison to others. They have a lot of class in how they perform, nothing phony with attention on all of the right things. My absolute favorite NA team. :cheer:

The only thing this team lacks is the fact that he's not a bit taller. The lack of height difference hurts them a bit i think.

They have a great attitude, and seem to have a really nice friendship. They both bring something to the partnership (although height is not one of themā€¦.) I understand why they did a FD a bit similar to their Amelie, but I hope we'll get to see something a little different next year; these two are just brimming with potential. Definitely my US team to watch in upcoming years.

Hawayek/Baker's free skate this season was a great favorite of mine. I never got tired of watching it. I'm a little sad that we won't get to see that beautiful program in competition anymore.
