’m glad Finland picked Williams and Lewer who I love but tell me again they can pick whomever they want even if their way down the list and bypass other Americans who are higher up and other teams from other countries that are higher up correct?
As long as the skaters who are guaranteed one or two get their guaranteed spots, and the skaters they choose have the GP minimum, have been submitted by their Feds, and are eligible, hosts can pick anyone in the Top 75. I can't remember when any skater or team in the Top 75 of Men, Women, and Dance didn't have the GP minimum, not to be confused with TES minimums.

25 SB or WS would get on the alternates list, but they're guaranteed nothing in the initial selection. They're at the mercy of the hosts.

As long as they have met the minimum total score which is 60% of the highest score in the discipline at Worlds - for Pairs, only teams down to SB 47 have met that threshold. Host picks are exempt from the minimum total score requirement.

I called it the "GP minimum." There may have been one year where a discipline other than Pairs didn't have the Top 75 have the GP minimum score, but typically Men, Women, and Dance Top 75 have them, and Pairs don't, but there haven't been that many times in recent history where there are even 75 Pairs on the list.

Hosts get to do what they want with host picks, no matter how much it is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED THAT THEY DO HAVE THE MINIMUMS. (As if.) And return skaters and split couples can't, by definition have them.

When does the point-earning process for Olympic team qualifications begin? Is that next fall?

Team Event qualification starts with the ISU Championship events next year, and concludes with the Grand Prix events in the fall of 2025.
Is the Team Event Qualifying/Event document available yet? I was searching for it a couple months ago because the 2022 doc was released in Dec 2019 so I thought the 2026 one might be available by now.

It's on here somewhere because it was released last January, but here you are.
Let's start a separate GSD thread for this?

ETA - thanks @skatingguy :) - link to the new GSD thread:

Correct, once all the guaranteed places have been assigned.

Vaananen/Clerici have been invited to Skate America.

Sinä raaputat selkääni, ja minä riipun sinun. 🇫🇮
To that point, perhaps the USFS inviting DavSmo, MetBeru and Egadze to SkAm will grease the wheels of Daniil Parkman's release, lol.

I don't understand why Ruiter has only one GP assignment as the Canadian CHampion?
Ruiter is not in the top 24 of the current ISU World Standings and is ranked #60 on the ISU Season Best total scores list from which the projected alternates list is made (ISU SB # added by me below):
1-10
Aoki (SkAm) [#32 in SB]
M Kim [34]
S Joos [40]
Pezzetta [42]
Pelkonen (Finlandia) [43]
Lin-Gracey [44]
Mikutina [46]
Seniuk [52]
Andrews [54]
Ruiter (SCI) [60]

11-20
Dupuis (SCI) [61]
Seo [63]
Ting [64]
Choi [65]
Miclette [69]
Kawabe [70]
Paganini [71]
Everhardt [72]
H Chen (CoC) [73]
Sauter [75]

It’s been super interesting to me that people thought Piper and Paul and the Italians and Madison and Evan were going to stop this year or last year. I saw zero signs of that despite what was going on in all of their lives.

I was one of the people who thought G/P and C/B might retire in 2023 or 2024 (I always figured the Italians might stay in for the home Olympics), so it’s been interesting to me to watch how it’s played out. In 2022, G/P had a significant drop in the standings from the prior year - IIRC they even finished behind Fear/Gibson at 2022 Worlds. I doubt they would have stayed in if they hadn’t rebounded so well the following year and moved so far ahead of the other CAN teams. Likewise, it’s possible the picture for C/B might look different if Hawayek/Baker had continued with the upward momentum they’ve had in 2022.

I do think this could be an interesting season at the top, though. I’d expect to see all three of those teams at the next Olympics at this point, but I don’t necessarily think they’ll sweep the podium.

There may be some spots opening up in the Women's field. Xwitter seems to be abuzz this morning - check the Korean news thread.
If members of the Korean team are suspended, how would that impact GP assignments? If it was a seeded skater, would that shift everyone’s assignments?

Short answer - no. Replacements would be selected from the Alternates List.

ETA - if the suspensions had happened before the GP Host Commission met and the KSU had kept them out of the initial selection pool then that would have moved both Gubanova and Mikutina into the "invited skaters" category. As it is, the assignments will remain the same and if the KSU upholds the suspensions and WDs both skaters from their assignments then each of the host feds (USFS, JSF and Finnish fed) will select their replacements from the Alternates List, abiding by the 3-skaters per country limit, etc.

The seeding doesn’t get redone. The host feds would just choose new skaters based off last year’s season’s best list.

Ok who do I have to bribe to get my favourite Irish dance team a Grand Prix assignment? I thought with them qualifying for the free at worlds they would be?

I wanted one for them too, @4rkidz, but when the standings were redone at the end of the season, they were too low. We'll have to wait and see if they get to sub for someone. There are always dropouts from the GP, so it might happen.

Very rare for there to be WDs in ice dance on the GP. I wouldn't hold my breath for any team that isn't from a host fed for a GP spot if they don't have one already.
