No one from China was listed on the Shanghai Trophy announcement, yet. I would guess Jin and <random ID team> and An will be there, anyway.
Have we seen any names yet?
I think the announcement only mentioned skaters who were in top-16 at Worlds OR top-3 at Junior Worlds

Yes, I mentioned in the Korean thread Cha and Kim Chaeyeon are going.

There were some others, but I don't have access to the K&C, so didn't post.

I really doubt they will not invite anyone from China, because that excludes all of them.

Seriously - you post about Cha & Kim in the Korean thread but you can't mosey on into the Dance Hall to mention Chock/Bates, GuiFab and LopBri? Or the Jason Brown fan thread? Or that Bradie's been invited back? There are places you could have shared the names that aren't in KnC (I did, though, start a thread in KnC :)).

I saw @coralline was posting the dance teams, so didn't. Or at least she posted Chock/Bates.

I wish to avoid Brown altogether for what is remaining of my time in skating fandom. :p

I mean, I get the Brown avoidance but that's still pretty notable news.

I will post noteworthy news and be regaled with essays about how he's the most godly figure skater ever with the largest fanbase ever and I'm just too stupid to recognize the greatness of someone whose hardest jump is 3F... so no.

Good to hear. Hope team China gives it their best shot at worlds.

An's got a great 3Lo and 2A, decent basic skating, nice spins, and can hit good positions... But that step sequence is so ridiculously awkward, and nothing really works for me apart from the final arm movements she does after her final combo spin.

Aw, well, Zhang/Feng have a great rapport, at least. I am getting sentimental 😭

And hey they won!

Shame they can't get a second assignment, but @Karen-W was saying there's only 3 spots, and the third is already promised to the team who won in Riga last week.

Yes, there are only three, and Zhang/Feng will miss out. There's no Pairs in Wuxi, unfortunately.

Well, China only has 3 spots because they skipped Jr Worlds last year. And I can't imagine that Zhang/Huang won't be confirmed the last spot (and their 2nd assignment) given they scored 14 points higher last week than Zhang/Feng scored this week. 145+ is a very beatable score by teams like Kemp/Elizarov and Holichenko/Darenskiy, whereas both of those teams would have to work a bit harder and come out super-prepared to beat the 159+ that Zhang/Huang scored last week.

Zhang/Huang may have the last JGP spot but Zhang/Feng has my heart 💗

Now is a good time to throwback to the first time we saw Zhang/Feng two years ago as the tiniest babies 😭

I've been internally screaming about JGP spots since China skipped junior worlds last season because we've waited so long for Zhang/Feng (and Guo/Zhang) to turn junior eligible only to know for sure that at least one of them won't get two slots, and then MORE internal screaming after the age changes which meant they have to fight with Huang Yihang for slots (obviously a losing battle which meant Guo/Zhang doesn't even get to go out this season). It's insane to me that junior pairs are not getting JGPs if they're not landing both their triple throws and triple twists and getting level four lifts and throw in a FoDs for good measure, and at the same time a senior team who can't even land their double throws are getting sent to COC 💀💀💀

Babies please hang on and continue to grow and Huang Yihang please scurry off to seniors goodbye.

Note: In case anyone new is wondering why I (and most Chinese pairs fans) am being unfriendly/hostile towards Huang Yihang, this guy has a reputation for being an obnoxious brat with his behaviour and a poor track record with the way he treats his partners, despite being inconsistent and the weak link in the team. Huang Yihang and his previous partner Wang Yuchen competed on the JGP in 2018 without much success and they missed out on Beijing Olys after bombing at Nebelhorn. Huang then ditched his partner shortly after complaining that she's 'too heavy' and 'not good enough' (these were her replies to comments back then). He then teamed with Zhang Jiaxuan who is an outstanding pairs girl but wouldn't be senior eligible until the 25/26 season, even though he himself already aged out of juniors. Before this Zhang had a totally junior-eligible partner in Wang Zhiyu, and their tech content at that time is not worse than what you saw Zhang/Huang do in Riga (i.e., Zhang could've and should've done just as well on the JGP last year had they not split for her to team with Huang).

Now while most people who watched Zhang/Huang for the first time in Riga last week may think that they're a nice team, the formation of this team was very much an easy way out for Huang to get domestic results (because they knew they wouldn't be able to compete internationally for three years according to the rules then). They just lucked out that the age changes allowed them one season in juniors before they can go senior next season. And whether he'll be able to maintain this level of performance as Zhang continues to mature and grow... remains to be seen.

Zhang Dan had a growth spurt at 20 so....
Right but I'm saying it's not necessary. Maybe she will, maybe (probably) she won't.

Look I don't really like Huang (I thought he was very nice with Wang, but it never worked out), but simple thing is, he needs to be pandered to for the next 2 years. He will end up bringing spots back for China this season. After that, if I have enough energy left after screaming at my laptop all through Milano to keep watching, I'll join you in rooting for his downfall.

Wonder if they'll send them to senior worlds, if Peng/Wang are really out.

The annoying thing is, we have enough depth in junior pairs to do this without him. And it's not like he's the most reliable thing in the world. Babies would've been fine (better) if he weren't part of the competition.

Zhang/Huang are not senior eligible until next season. They can/should start planning their trip to Nebelhorn (or whichever is the Olys qualifier)
Then I hope they persuade Peng/Wang to stay for the season - again, if they're really meaning to leave. I don't think I want to see it going to Nebelhorn, it's ****ing embarrassing for China if they don't even have a guaranteed spot or even anyone to be batting for it at these worlds.

Just do nationals, Asian Games, and worlds, like how hard is it?

But wasn't it after she was hospitalized, where she was given proper nutrition?
I would guess so. IIRC, Pang of Pang/Tong also seemed to be too "tiny" and "thin" to people? Shen Xue seemed to be the fittest of the three.

But in this case, even if Zhang's indeed been made to keep her figure using those practices, I would expect they'll at least keep making her do so until China's comfortable with Pairs - so the next two years, anyway. Does not make it right, of course, but it does make the point less relevant.

Pang was very slender when she and Tong were the guest skaters at the Colonial Travel 2005 Worlds farewell dinner, but she looked exactly the same as on video. I know people were worried that she was actually 10 pounds lighter than the camera showed, but that wasn't the case. Tong looked thinner and a bit drawn, but it was also at the end of a long competition. Pang was on the tall side for a skater, too.

That isn't to downplay the horror of what Chinese skaters have described as "weight management" -- public shaming, being sent to eat with the coaches for gaining an ounce, being asked to chew, but not swallow -- but Pang wasn't scary thin in real life, at least in 2005. I think the most  part about Dan Zhang was how much she did grow, which was so unexpected.

How reliable are the rumors that Peng/Wang have split? That would be pretty significant and may piss some other feds off if they really are done and aren't WD from GPdF to be replaced. Okay, that would piss me off because right now, EfiMit are 1st in line for any GP vacancies.

This just reminds me that someone on reddit once said that they weren't surprised that Chen Lu was the only singles skater to actually do well for China - because she's been literally the only person who looked like she had muscles, unlike the rest of them.
