Ted Barton brought up in his interview with Amy Shao Ning Yang that she had won the 2020 Canadian Novice national title (she was with a different coaching team back then) and has had to overcome challenges to come back in her skating journey to win the gold at Challenge today. I'm very happy for her! :)

I am a bit confused on how skaters qualify to Canadian Nationals. Is it just from Challenge and Byes? Is there more than one Challenger? Is it similar to US Sectionals?

Skate Canada Challenge is the only competition to qualify for Nationals (Senior & Junior levels). Skaters qualify for Challenge via their respective Sectional Championships (what used to be USFS' 9 Regional Championships) - there are 10 sections in Canada.

For the third consecutive year, Skate Canada Challenge will take place at Seven Oaks Arena at Garden City Community Centre, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Held from November 28 to December 1, 2024, the competition will serve as a qualifying event for the National Championships.
The new year will start in exciting fashion as the country’s best junior and senior figure skaters converge in Laval, Quebec for the 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships. The competition will take place from January 14-19, 2025, and will be held at Place Bell for the first time in the event’s history.
From February 6-9, 2025, Canada’s up-and-coming skaters will compete in Edmonton, Alberta at the first edition of the Skate Canada Trophy. Held at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre, the new national competition will bring together the former Novice Canadian Championships and Skate Canada Challenge – Pre-Novice/Novice events under one umbrella.
The season will wrap up with the 2025 Skate Canada Cup at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex in Waterloo, Ontario from February 28 to March 2, 2025. New for this season, the Skate Canada Cup will now encompass the novice level of synchronized skating, as well as gold and open categories.

When my kids skated, they competed at sectionals (against those in their province) and the top finishers then skated at a divisional competition to qualify for "Canadians" as we called it. This relatively newer system is much fairer as some divisions were considerably tougher than others. This way the judges get a real look at the talent across the country. This local rink complex is nice and there was no charge for spectators so a great way to spend a day but I was sad to see not many there who did not seem to be connected to the skaters participating.

Not sure if anyone can access this but here's a link to a Laurie Nealin article about the 4 Manitoba skaters who qualified for the Canadian Championships.

ETA: That article focuses mostly on Howes & Bresden. Nealin's earlier article is about Kemp & Elizarov

Thanks for getting this one posted @Skate Talker ! Unfortunately, an email is required to access the full article, so I will post excerpts in the Canadian men's and women's news threads.
