We can debate what kind of skating will relate to a broader audience, but given that NBC will apparently not be airing 4CC pairs or dance and you can only watch it on Peacock with no available replays it's pretty clearly not the music choices that are the biggest issue here. Yes you can get VPNs and try fan streams but sometimes even I can't be bothered if it's not an event with my top faves. Doesn't matter how watchable and audience friendly a program is if there's no way to actually watch it. A Rach 2 program you can click on out of boredom when aimlessly scrolling before bed is more likely to reach the audience because it can actually be reached at all! Obviously it's not like an either/or situation because YouTube will take the programs down within like six hours or whatever regardless, but access is the biggest block to growing the fanbase. We could definitely be using more contemporary music(and I'd argue we could actually be using music made this century but what do I know), but trying to watch figure skating is just such a hassle.

YouTube taking the programs down isn't because YouTube is trying to kill interest in figure skating. It's because the rights holders to the music or to the broadcast are getting the program removed. If you'd like to see a beautiful free dance, you can look at this one, but the music isn't there because Beatles Inc is vigilant about its copyrights.

And not to sound too "get off my lawn" but there have always been times when skating competitions have gotten very limited broadcast time, or not been broadcast at all - even before streaming and online broadcasts. That's not necessarily skating's fault. When ESPN and channels like that are running broadcasts of sports like lawn bowling, IMO it's not because lawn bowling has a bigger audience than skating. It's because the decision makers at those networks don't think that skating draws the type or size of audience they want.

For no-copyright troubles…and lots of happy memories:

Go back to this! Ah, so many competitions of JOY! It just keeps playing in my head. 😇 🎉 🌺

Adding: Maybe a team can begin a new RD with this…and, a few seconds in, go to an 80s beat (whatever that is), alter the costumes, etc. ROTFL.

For those with HBO Max, both Mannequin and the sequel are on the streamer. Last night I watched the original for “research”. It came out the year I was born! I can already see the costumes, and a straightline lift depicting the motorcycle ride. A team better do this!

Listen to Your Heart is 1988! I’m listening to it right now in a Maltese bar. I will uber any team that picks this for a RD.
You KNOW some choreographer is going to put together an edit featuring the DJ Sammy version and we'll all just collectively sigh.

I do not know what that is and I’m not going to find out. Roxette forever!

60s babies? :p
lol no it's a pretty wide age-range from early 20's on up (and they're mostly what people would call 4 year fans of figure skating- like they know the big names but not really what happens between Olympics and also they are not all from the US so it was a pretty interesting reaction)

Well, if the 80s hype really has something to do with Netflix and „Stranger Things“, I assume we will hear more Bauhaus. Netflix recommended to watch “Lockwood & Co“ and it is very 80s. I managed only 3 episodes so far as I am frightened by ghost stories (i know…) but Bauhaus were featured heavily.
This was my favourite song of them. Not very danceable though
I admit, I hope Reed & Ambrulevicius take this golden opportunity to go FULL GOTH. They've been paddling in the shallows for years now, it's time to get the crimpers and COMMIT TO THE BIT.

What if a song is from another decade, but a cover by another band in the 80's topped the charts?

I was wondering if they would designate music written in the 1980s or music recorded in the 1980s. I'm imagining the latter but we'll have to see.

It must be a gaming discord then.

The Americans is DH’s and my joint favorite TV series ever. There are others that only one of us loves but that one we agree on.

And the music was only exceeded by the period clothes and all those wigs Keri wore.
Thank you for this! I found it. Have been watching 4 seasons already. I am in a bubble of ideological Russians who do not want war.

No one wants to hear some sad, emo cover of great '80s songs.
My first thought is the David Cook cover of Billie Jean that Ilia Malinin's used last year.

This list has some awesome 80s cover versions of songs. Many I had no idea were covers! Some well-known songs on the list:

  • Walk This Way (Run DMC)
  • Every Time You Go Away (Paul Young)
  • La Bamba (Los Lobos)
  • I Love Rock & Roll (Joan Jett)
  • Venus (Bananarama)
  • Red Red Wine (UB40)
  • The Tide Is High (Blondie)
  • Puttin' on the Ritz (Taco)
  • Got My Mind Set On You (George Harrison)
  • Cum On Feel The Noize (Quiet Riot)
  • Always Something There to Remind Me (Naked Eyes)
  • Thing Called Love (Bonnie Raitt)

Actually, someone could (and should) do a dance to 80s covers of Tommy James & The Shondells songs - I Think We're Alone Now (Tiffany), Mony Mony (Billy Idol), and Crimson & Clover (Joan Jett)
