Davison/Borisov and Ritchie/McLeod are both new teams with one partner who is new to pairs, and neither looked really ready to compete. D/B's individual elements were looking good, but they were struggling putting it all together in their programmes. And a spectacular waxel combo from Daniel! They are also using a truly dreadful Postmodern Jukebox-style cover of Lovefool in the SP. Just skate to the Cardigans! Individually, Kyle McLeod looked like the strongest pair skater in this competition, but R/M just need more time. I would still give them the final JGP spot though.
Agreed. There is no sense in wasting the 4th spot and I think that RitMcL are comparable to DavBor at this point, so it seems fair for each of them to have 1 JGP assignment. WoodLap have 2 already and certainly showed that they warrant those assignments. I don't expect them to be competing for the podium at either of their JGPs but their throw 3S was really impressive.

Two more new pairs teams in the entry list for the October Qualifier, published on BIS Sportity account:
  • Isla Shenton / Joel Kirby (Advanced Novice) - not the dude from Love Island  but the 2022 Adv Nov champion (with Jessica Hennessy). Shenton is new to pairs but has been competing in Adv Nov singles, with some decent results but no 2ax. I think he's too old for novice internationally, but for the best that they don't try to compete elements they aren't ready for.
  • Amy-Jayne Robson / Mackenzie Reid (Basic Novice) - I think they're from Aberdeen, and she has also been competing Adv Nov singles.
Coley/Casey are also listed in AdvNov pairs - I'm glad they're still together. I was expecting them to move up and I think he's also aged out of international novice, but he's been withdrawing from singles competitions so maybe they've had some injury issues.

So if everyone stays together for another 3 months we should have 10 or 11 pairs at the British Championships! (3 Basic Novice, 2 Advanced Novice, 4 Junior, 1/2 Senior - I have Smart/Mattick as status unknown at the moment, if anyone knows that they're planning to compete this season, please let me know!)

No dance at the October Qualifier; there's a separate event in November but the last couple of years it's been cancelled and everyone given a bye to the British.

Sophia Bushell is now representing Spain.
I guess the Spanish Fed jumped the gun with this announcement, because according to an IDC interview with Sophia Bushell and Antonio Pena they're going to be skating for GB. I'm not complaining!

They'll be eligible to compete internationally from December, but should have a couple of domestic competitions before then. Sophia also posted on IG that their FD is La La Land, which feels very upbeat for Team SK (again, no complaints from me).
Neary/Spruill and Cunningham/Hammond were both at the BIS dance camp a couple of weeks ago, but it appears both have since split. (Tallulah and Jamie are both freshly back on IPS.)
Jamie Hammond already has a new partner, Kiah Whieldon:
https://www.instagram.com/p/DABevj1Irnz/

She's been competing senior in solo dance (including internationally) but I think they're both still junior eligible in partnered dance, though maybe only for this season. They're training in Swindon with Lloyd Jones and Aurelija Ippolito. Always glad for more opportunities to see Lloyd in the KnC!

ETA: Current stocktake: 2 Intermediate Novice teams, 3 Advanced Novice, 5 Junior and 5 Senior. Can we get another junior or senior team in the next few weeks and require a second group at the British Championships?

Very respectable showing by the Brits at Nebelhorn. I'm amazed at how much V-L/D have come on over the summer. Their pair elements look much more secure, and they can actually perform a program rather than just white knuckling from element to element. Just a reliable sbs triple needed now...

Compared with the Autumn Qualifier, I though F/G's RD was really good, but the FD is still a big miss. I like that they are trying something slightly different with the first music cut, although it doesn't play to Lilah's strengths. But the 2nd music cut is just padding time until they can get to the choreo elements, and then Crazy in Love never properly gets going, and it all fizzles out in the end. Not sure what they could do to fix it really.

Yes, I was impressed by both V-L/D and Ed Appleby going clean in the SP and clean-ish in the LP at Nebelhorn; I don't recall that ever happening before for either of them. None of their programmes are particularly great, but if measured, comfortable programmes with room to breathe is what it takes to get more consistency this season, that's the right approach.

I also thought F/G's RD looked much sharper at Nebelhorn. From an enjoyment perspective, I think this is my favourite FD of theirs since Madonna, but as a high-scoring competitive programme, I don't think this is it. It wouldn't solve the fundamental issues, of course, but a costume change would help. Having Lilah in bright red and Lewis in all black draws all the attention to Lilah.

On the junior front, I was disappointed BIS let the dance spot in Ankara go empty rather than giving Marler Davies / Black a second event - they certainly wouldn't have come last. Looking forward to seeing Slatter / Ongay-Perez in Ljubljana and Wuxi.

And the junior ladies are looking better than they have for a long time. Leilah Patten is a lovely skater with some beautiful positions and musical sensitivity, though the jumps were a bit messy. And Alice Smith is the most promising young jumper I can recall - at least since the McCorkell/Paulinus years. She's still quite stiff and the second mark needs a lot of work (and I could do without the Rusbaby packaging) but she's very young.

If not, maybe she will consider solo dance. I think she has some experience, though I'm not sure if she's competed before.
Layla Karnes is listed in senior solo dance for the British Qualifier in November (entries out on Sportity).

One new team in senior dance: Lucyna Okhrem and Jan Nordman. He was the senior silver medalist with Jessica Marjot in 2019-20, but only competed internationally once or twice and didn’t get the tech minimums to use the second spot at Euros. (I think he’s originally from Finland but has lived in London for ages.) Google tells me Okhrem previously represented Poland in singles, most recently junior in 2016-17.

Also a team entered in Basic Novice, Briony Long and George Baynes, so hopefully we’ll have all levels at the British Championships.

BIS have published a provisional list of skaters qualified for the British Championships on Sportity. Smart/Mattick are a notable absence; they would have been eligible for a bye based on being in the Performace Squad last season. So unfortunately it seems reasonable to conclude that they are done. :(

Other skaters who have not yet competed domestically or internationally this season but who have met the criteria for the Perfomance or Academy (BIS rebranding for juniors) squads have all got byes: Freddie Leggott, Joe Zakipour, Arin Yorke, Alexa Severn - I guess there are a lot of injuries in Nottingham at the moment.

Senior Women
Rebecca Gillespie (Sheffield)
Emma Lyons (Dundee)
Suzi Murray (Magnum)
Nina Povey (Sheffield)
Arabella Sear-Watkins (Dundee)
Genevieve Somerville (Dundee)
Kristen Spours (Swindon)
Saskia Zainchkovskaya (Nottingham)

Senior Men
Edward Appleby (Romford)
Brandon Bailey (Oxford)
Connor Bray (Lee Valley)
Ken Fitterer (BIS)
Freddie Leggott (Nottingham)
Tao MacRae (BIS)
Henry Privett-Mendoza (Sheffield)
Joseph Zakipour (Nottingham)

Senior Pairs
Anastasia Vaipan-Law / Luke Digby (Dundee)

Senior Ice Dance
Phebe Bekker / James Hernandez (Nottingham)
Lilah Fear / Lewis Gibson (Alexandra Palace)
Eleanor Hirst / Anthony Currie (Sheffield)
Charlotte Man / Toby Palmer *
Lucyna Okhrem / Jan Nordman *
* Conditional on competing at the November Qualifier
(Not listed: Sophia Bushell / Antonio Pena)

Junior Women
Alisa Biserova (Romford)
Darya Dalgich (BIS)
Jessica Hennessey (Sheffield)
Emma Lyons (Dundee)
Polly Morris (Dundee)
Lilian Musgrave (BIS)
Leilah Patten (BIS)
Gemma Ratcliffe (Nottingham)
Hannah Robertson (Kirkcaldy)
Arabella Sear-Watkins (Dundee)
Alexa Severn (Nottingham)
Alice Smith (Romford)
Holly Tighe (Sheffield)
Gailie Tsang (Peterborough)
Arina Vorobeva (Nottingham)
Ava Wilson (Basingstoke)
Zinia Wood (Swindon)
Saskia Zainchkovskaya (Nottingham)

If some or all of Lyons, Sear-Watkins and Zainchkovskaya choose to only compete senior, then Kira Khomenko (Alexandra Palace), Kim Carter (Coventry) and Isabel Barnes (Deeside) are next in line.

Junior Men
Rene Bektashi-Brown (Altrincham)
Jack Donovan (Nottingham)
Lucas Fitterer (BIS)
Jedidiah Lincoln (BIS)
Tao MacRae (BIS)
Edward Solovyov (Whitley Bay)
Lloyd Thomson (Auchenharvie)
Solomon Williamson (Nottingham)
Luke Woodthorpe-Smith (Nottingham)
Arin Yorke (Nottingham)

If Tao MacRae only competes seniors, Louis Gregory (Romford) will sub in.

Junior Pairs
Neamh Davison / Daniel Borisov (Sheffield)
Sophie Dracas / Pelham Wright (Slough)
Rebecca Ritchie / Kyle McLeod (Dundee)
Zarah Wood / Alex Lapsky (Swindon)

Junior Ice Dance
Molly Hairsine / Alessio Surenkov-Gultchev (Sheffield)
Isabel Harrison / Harvey Dicks (Sheffield) - but they've already split
Mimi Marler Davies / Joseph Black (Alexandra Palace)
Ashlie Slatter / Atl Ongay-Perez (Streatham)
Kiah Whieldon / Jamie Hammond *
* Conditional on competing at the November Qualifier.

I'm not copying over all the novice qualifiers but Macey Freeman, who was a very young Adv Nov champion last season is not included, and doesn't appear to have competed since winning the title. Sofia Gates and Nik Vayo in Int Nov dance are listed as pending, so potentially still some eligibility issues being worked out with USFS?

Oooh, Mathew Gates' daughter! Thanks for mentioning her/them. They were on 2024 U.S. National Development Team so maybe related to that? https://www.instagram.com/reel/DAUzMU4xyjP/
ETA: They placed 10th of 15 teams in Juvenile at the U.S. Ice Dance Final in November 2023.

I'm impressed at how calm Lilah & Lewis were skating today knowing they had a crack at beating the world champions. Still hate the program, but I'm pleased for them!

V-L/D were great too. Softer style really suits them.

Now that the registration deadline has passed, BIS had published the confirmed list of entrants for the British Championships on Sportity.

Senior Men: OUT - Brandon Bailey, Joseph Zakipour. (Neither has competed domestically or internationally this season, both were listed in the national team announcement. So maybe injury, though I wouldn't be surprised if either or both has moved on from competition.)

Senior Ice Dance: IN - Sophia Bushell / Antonio Pena :)

Junior Women: OUT - Alexa Severn (Probably injured? Also hasn't competed this season, but was at the BIS media day in August and the second featured skater in the team announcement behind only Fear/Gibson.) Emma Lyons, Arabella Sear-Watkins, Saskia Zainchkovskaya (as anticipated, all competing senior). IN - Kim Carter, Mia Johnstone, Kira Khomenko, Sarah Tunnicliffe.

Junior Men: OUT - Tao MacRae (competing senior). IN - Louis Gregory.

Junior Ice Dance: OUT - Isabel Harrison / Harvey Dicks (split).

What?! :wuzrobbed They were so promising and seemed really good friends.

Is he retiring from competing? The only other reason I could think of that would make a tiny bit of sense is to find an older partner who would be eligible for senior sooner than Ash will be - but they hadn’t reached the very top of juniors yet so that would seem premature :(

Ashlie will be senior eligible in 2026-27. Though with the new rules she will be junior eligible throughout the next quad if she ends up starting over with a less experienced partner.
Atl seems very academic, so I wondered if he was retiring to focus on A-levels/university, but the hints of an acrimonious break make me wonder if it's something else. :(
They registered for the British Championships and were still on the entry list on Monday, so signs are it was sudden. :(

Trying not to speculate too much about this particular situation but for any team, if long-term goals are no longer aligned, and given the investment and ambition involved, I imagine things can end up getting pretty messy in the near term.

Usually when one partner retires to focus on school it's not a shock to the other partner, but something they would have seen as a possibility. And normally they would finish out the season first. Splitting midseason seems more like he has another partner already lined up and wants to start training with them ASAP, but who really knows. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt until we know more.

Wouldn’t be surprised if health challenges contributed to his decision. They wouldn’t be the first team to split after attempting to recover from a serious injury. :(

All she said was that it wasn't her decision, so we don't know for sure it was his. In theory, could be, she was told by medics or parents that her head injury made it too risky to continue. But the sense of acrimony with Atl, unfollowing, etc... again, I think it's something else, but we just don't know yet.

Am I the only person struggling to get my head around the fact that Janine from EastEnders (Charlie Brooks) will be skating with Eric Radford in Dancing on Ice?
I posted about the 2025 Dancing on Ice pro skaters (but didn't' list the celebrities) in this thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ours-skater-news-updates.110845/#post-6673695
Is there any interest in a separate GSD thread for this year's DOI show? I started one last year but no one posted in it.

I'm a bit disappointed Mark Hanretty was partnered with Michaela Strachan on DOI. I was hoping he'd a a chance to finally win in his last season.

In other lighter skating news, we've all missed our opportunity to go on a Saga Cruise with Torvill & Dean.
"During this cruise Jayne and Chris will tell you about their careers as the world’s top ice dance skaters and there will also be an opportunity for you to ask them your burning questions about the world of ice dancing." There really needs to be at least one FSUer on this cruise! Oh the questions they could ask :D

Aww, I didn’t watch DOI last year. As it’s Mark’s last year I probably will watch, so a thread would be nice if anyone else is watching?

I was disappointed too for exactly the same reason. Hopefully they can have a good run though! I remember Michaela being on Wide Awake Club and The Hitman and Her in the late 80’s and she even released a single with PWL which has stuck in my head forever
