I would think many of those are placeholders right now, as the skaters/teams have not received official assignment letters. USFS might be having a wait-and-see attitude regarding how they perform in their first JGP. Or the deadline for entry submission came before the committee could decide. Hence, expect a lot of reshuffling in the entries in these latter part of the JGP competitions

The US assignments definitely appear to be placeholders - the USFS Int'l Assignments page usually gets updated the same day/next day after the ISU puts up the preliminary entries and there is still nothing listed for the JGP Poland assignments.

Some thoughts on ice dance assignments for the last two JGPs:

USA:Mullens & Ilin / Cain will get the same JGP since they share the coaching team, probably to Slovenia. Then Peals & Pederson / Starr may get the last one.

CAN:Chloe NGUYEN / Brendan GIANG most likely will go to China since they share the coaching team with Madelaine Ann BREAU / Namu LEE. The Korean team has already announced that they will go to China.

JAPAN:
Sara KISHIMOTO / Atsuhiko TAMURA may go together with an IAM Canadian team,Auréa Cinçon-Debout / Earl Jesse Celestino or Audra Gans / Gabriel Liu.

The USA entries appear to be placeholders once again.
The Mullens confirmed their 2nd assignment is Slovenia in a post-FD interview with Golden Skate on Saturday. The singles assignments certainly do seem to be placeholders but I'm going to operate under the presumption that the ice dance entries are the actual ones and the skaters have received their notifications.

Process of elimination means that JGP China will go to the Peals and, probably, Ilin/Cain - though it's possible the USFS may assign Stapert/Korotcov to China instead of Ilin/Cain just to give all the younger teams who are scoring in a similar range (127+-138+) one JGP each this season.

The Mullens medaled so they will get a 2nd. The only Woman and Man, so far, did not medal, and others have not skated yet, so I doubt that they have a 2nd entry, at this time. My understanding is that 2nd JGP entry will go to medalists first and then off the ISP eligible list, if needed.

I think you are conflating the assignment strategies the USFS has for the singles categories versus the pairs and ice dance categories. The US simply has more than enough spots available in pairs and ice dance to ensure that deserving teams, even if they don't medal, get a second assignment.

With 14 spots in ice dance, it is a very safe assumption to make that the Mullens (and the Peals, Wolfkostin/Tsarevski and Aboian/Veselukhin) were assigned two JGPs straightaway, regardless of whether or not they medal at their first JGP. Last season bears the truth of that assumption out - the Mullens placed 7th at their first JGP (#2 Linz) with a decent score of 135.30 and had already been assigned a second JGP (#4 Osaka) before they ever set foot on the ice at their first JGP - the USFS Assignments page had them listed immediately. Things got a little more muddled later on with Hauer/Starr and Carhart/Horovyi both withdrawing from their assignments because of injury - and that allowed for Pedersen/Chen to get an initial assignment (#3 Istanbul), then a second assignment (#5 Budapest), as well as for Ilin/Cain to get a second (#5 Budapest), but seeing as the USFS didn't even wind up using all 14 spots last year because of those unexpected injury withdrawals on somewhat short notice (Hauer/Starr WD from #1 Bangkok less than 2 weeks beforehand), it's quite clear the USFS' bar for deciding to award a 2nd JGP assignment in ice dance is not that you need to medal at your first one.

The same is true for pairs, IMO. With 12 spots, it's really a matter of showing you're competition ready early enough to get added to the ISP. Obviously, Flores/Wang were getting two regardless of whether or not they medaled this past weekend in Riga. That's a perk of being the reigning Jr World silver medalists. But seeing as there are only 4 JGPs with pairs, having a "medal or no 2nd JGP" standard is unattainable for almost every other team. If you want to make an argument that there is a minimum score achieved standard to confirm a 2nd JGP assignment for the pairs teams, then I could buy that but you're not selling me on "no second assignment without a medal" when the USFS has 12 spots to play with and only three junior teams on the ISP to start with when JGP assignments started coming due and only two more teams added since. Moss/Galbavy are getting a 2nd JGP and were likely always slated for a second one even if it hasn't officially been confirmed on the USFS' Int'l Assignments page yet. We'll see how the other teams currently listed for two assignments do this week (Carpenter/Maravilla are at JGP #2 and I'm presuming that both Hansen/Church and McDanold/Felberbaum will be John Nicks IPC).

As far as singles - I don't doubt for one second that the USFS has told every single skater currently assigned that they will only get a 2nd assignment if they medal. The spots are simply too precious to give anyone a 2nd spot unless they put themselves into contention for the JGPF on their first assignment.

KarenW, you stated it well. I don't follow Pairs and Dance that closely. Your assumption in the last paragraph is how I understand things to be.

For me, it is open to question whether a Team USA dance partnership that is brand-new in 2024 with zero competitive record already has been promised a second JGP or whether they are a placeholder for Slovenia. 🤷‍♀️

If you're referring to Aboian/Veselukhin - they are already listed for both of their JGPs on the USFS Int'l Assignments page. They do, also, have a competitive record - Chesapeake Open in early June, Dallas Classic in mid-July and LPIDI at the end of July - and they did remarkably well at all three of those competitions. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how they do in Thailand next week but the USFS doesn't have a history of shuffling the deck with their ID JGP assignments when the assignments are back-to-back like Aboian/Veselukhin this season. You're certainly free to take a different view but I'm going to respectfully disagree. ;)

I thought it would be obvious from the preceding conversation that I was/am referring to Pedersen/Starr, who do not have any competitive record together. :)

I would agree except that their assignments are back-to-back and there’s no time for USFS to see their first competition results and to switch them out if necessary.

Ahhhh... Yeah, that one is a bit more puzzling to me unless they're looking REALLY good in monitoring sessions. I was surprised to see them on the Slovenia entries list - it would have made a lot more sense to either give Ilin/Cain a second JGP or Stapert/Korotcov a first one at Slovenia and wait for the results of Pedersen/Starr's first JGP in Poland before confirming a second assignment in China. But that's just me and I'm not in charge of the USFS' JGP assignments. Maybe Charlie & Greg have a senior team/teams assigned to CS Budapest Trophy which is the same week as the last JGP in China, so the USFS was trying to avoid a coaching scheduling conflict.

So Hana Maria ABOIAN / Daniil VESELUKHIN will do a back to back…which is logical for reducing travel cost. A little bit sad though that I won't see them in Wuxi.
I’m looking forward to seeing Hana and Daniil. Her former partner was not a good fit. Interested to see Ben Starr and his new partner.
I shared the ice with both old teams, which was interesting, to say the least!

Not saying it would be likely, but it would not be unprecedented -- so for me, never say never.
The circumstances were different, but in 2023, JGP Turkey pairs SP was on Thu Sep 7, and Flores/Wang were not added until Fri Sep 1.
2024 JGP Poland free dance is on Sat Sep 28, and JGP Turkey rhythm dance is on Fri Oct 4.

Anyway ... I look forward to seeing the Mullens again in Slovenia!

Flores/Wang were swapped out for JGP Turkey when Williams/Lewer had to WD due to Naomi's ankle injury.

Here are the original JGP Turkey entries from August 8, 2023 - https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/2023-24-isu-junior-grand-prix.110722/post-6456002

The USFS asked Flores/Wang while they were in Austria if they would be fine with competing the following week in Turkey and they agreed to the swap. They were originally slated for JGP Budapest as their 2nd event. Here are the original Budapest entries from August 22, 2023- https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/2023-24-isu-junior-grand-prix.110722/post-6460113. Williams/Lewer were supposed to go to Poland as their 2nd assignment - here are the original Gdansk entries from August 29, 2023 - https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/2023-24-isu-junior-grand-prix.110722/post-6462415

The USFS JGP Pairs assignments were as follows:
JGP #2 Linz, Austria - Flores/Wang (Williams/Lewer substitutes)
JGP #3 Istanbul, Turkey - Williams/Lewer, Zheng/Deng (Flores/Wang substitutes)
JGP #5 Budapest, Turkey - Flores/Wang (Williams/Lewer substitutes)
JGP #6 Gdansk, Poland - Williams/Lewer (Flores/Wang substitutes)

All of the assignments were made and posted prior to the swap on Sept 1 and the USFS clearly had every intention of giving both Flores/Wang and Williams/Lewer two JGPs each and were listing both teams as substitutes if there was any unexpected reason why one team or the other needed to be switched around.

The circumstances surrounding what happened last season with Flores/Wang doing back-to-back JGPs and the USFS' decision-making with regard to the JGP ice dance assignments this season are not the same and the decision-making behind that decision last season is in no way comparable to assigning first Aboian/Veselukhin and then Pedersen/Starr to back-to-back JGPs this year.

I already had said in my previous post that the circumstances were different.
For me, the point is that we have seen that -- on short notice -- USFS can change and has changed an assignment. And for me, it does not make sense to rule out (as a logistical matter) any future possibility of change on short notice.

Well, Patrick Blackwell just earned the silver at JGP Czechia so that should guarantee him a 2nd JGP assignment. We may have to wait until after next week's JGP before the USFS confirms it though since it is, theoretically, possible that Taira & Jacob could both win their JGPs and leave the USFS with a real dilemma in determining who gets a 2nd assignment, lol.

And the JSF continues to be really tough on their men who are not performing - Nishino is off the JGP China list as of today.

Also, Kemp/Elizarov have been WD from their 2nd JGP in Poland. Such a shame for them.
so sad, i would understand it more if they would give others the opportunity because they have no hope of the final, but they just leave it blank. maybe let seigo, tsudoi, massaya, or some of their novices come up. I mean sure they won't make the final, but hey.
