Their ladies are weak.

If Anna Pezzetta can calm her nerves, she could be a contender. She has a couple of years, she's young.
Gutmann is working her way back from a very disappointing season last year too. I'd say Italy is just as viable for a team medal as any other country. With Canada on a downswing, and the US uncertain in pairs and women for 2026, countries like Georgia and Italy are certainly competitive.

I think US women will be fine by 2026. There are quite a few 14-18 year old girls that are showing promise. I agree about Gutmann, she is definitely on the rise again.

Didn't expect Rizzo to be compared to Kolyada. I find them both bland, but do think Kolyada is the far superior skater in terms of jumps, skating skills, and overall body movement. Not that it will matter by Milan, I guess.

Criteria for selection for ISU championships

Ice Dance

For Europeans: at the end of National Championships, the ranking is computed by summing the score of Nationals and the average of the two best scores achieved in international competitions (theoretically it also says national competition but no relevant couple is doing national competitions).

For Worlds and Junior Worlds: at the end of Egna Dance Trophy, the ranking is computed by summing the score of Nationals, the average of the two best scores achieved in international competitions (excluding Egna Dance Trophy) and the score of Egna Dance Trophy

If a couple can't attend Nationals, they can use another score (national or international).
Guignard/Fabbri (top 5 in an ISU Championship last season) can skip Egna and use another international score.

Single and Pairs

well, that's a bit confusing. Italian Federation outdid ISU and published a document with various cut and paste not properly edited making some sections quite confusing.

For Europeans: at the end of National Championships, the ranking is computed by summing the score of Nationals and the top 2 international (or in national competitions approved by the federation council) scores

For Worlds and Junior Worlds: at the end of European Championships, the ranking is computed by summing the score of Nationals and the top 3 international (or in national competitions approved by the federation council) scores. One score must be from an event taking place after Nationals.

And now the not so clear part.....I gather that scores from Nationals; ISU events and Challenger Series count fully while others count 90%. Not so clear because it refers to point 1 (which have some cut and paste issues). It seems international B events count 90%.

Decent performance from Beccari/Guarise. Caldara/Maglio were messy. And neither team would have scored as high as they did at an international competition. Based on what Caldara/Maglio delivered today, I'd say they're a non-factor at either of their GPs (MKJW and NHK). Beccari/Guarise are very well-matched and have a lot of potential - easily Italy #3 and, I expect, in another year, could be Italy #1. It will be interesting to see what an international panel does with them at Warsaw Cup in a few weeks.

Gutmann wins the Ladies event. Piredda struggled considerably in the Free: many pops, only triple and only 2+2 combos.

Right now, no Italian woman has the minimum TES for Worlds.
Gutmann lacks the SP one.
Same for Negrello. She went over it at JGP Egna but she needs to repeat it in a Senior competition
Pezzetta lacks the FS minimum (because her Lombardia Trophy FS was a disaster).
Piredda also needs the FS one.
Tornaghi lacks both.

Piredda and Pezzetta will skate next week at Ice Challenge
Tornaghi and Piredda will compete at Warsaw Cup.
Negrello is entered at NRW Trophy.

Also, Beccari/Guarise should be eligible for the GP next year, without needing to fulfill the minimum score requirement, as Matteo qualifies under the "Return of a Split Couple" category. It wouldn't surprise me if they got two GP assignments on the initial go-round, but they do still have some work to do in upgrading the twist and throws.

I think it was a very impressive debut for Lucrezia & Matteo considering how long they have been skating together and that they started training full programs only few weeks ago.

Tornaghi didn't get her SP minimum today at Warsaw Cup. Pezzetta did get her FS minimum at Ice Challenge, so I believe she's the only Italian woman who has them now, is that correct? And Negrello will be next to try for them at NRW Trophy, and then Gutmann at Golden Spin?

Pezzetta - Worlds SP/FS

*Beccari - Worlds SP/Euros FS
Piredda - Worlds SP/Euros FS

Gutmann - Euros SP/Worlds FS
Negrello - Euros SP/Worlds FS

Agostinelli - Euros SP/FS

Schwarz - Euros SP
Tornaghi - Euros SP

Rodeghiero - Euros FS

*skating Pairs with Matteo Guarise now

Just checked and the Santa Claus Cup entries are now available - Agostinelli, Pezzetta & Tornaghi are all assigned there.

Here's what we're looking at:
Skate Celje Nov 19-20 - Schwarz
NRW Nov 26-27 - Negrello
Santa Claus Cup Dec 1-2 - Agostinelli, Pezzetta, Tornaghi
Golden Spin - Gutmann

Not sure if Italy is sending anyone to Bosphorus Cup Nov 29-Dec 3 (possible - Schwarz?), Asian Open Trophy Dec 5-9 (doubtful) or Latvia Cup Dec 16-18 (possible - or is this the same weekend as Italian Nats?). Those are the last opportunities for skaters to earn the Euros mins.

I totally love Pezzetta. So far, just their only singles female eligible for Worlds but a grand one. Incredible jumper. Great music and costumes too. Develop to 2026 Olympics! 🇮🇹

Tornaghi and Pezzetta both WD from Santa Claus Cup and Agostinelli didn't get the Worlds TES min in the SP just now.

That leaves Gutmann and Schwarz attempting to get them next week at Golden Spin.
Theoretically they have time until the week of Challenge Cup/Bellu Memorial. They have 2 events in Italy: Merano Cup (in the week of Europeans) and IceLab Cup (the week after).

I was wondering what was up with his coaching situation as I noticed he didn't have his US coaches at Sheffield GP or at Warsaw Cup which sounded a bit strange. He looked a bit "coachless" there. In Sheffield, Matteo Zanni (the Egna dance coach) was sitting with him in K&C. In Warsaw he had Luc Maierhofer and one German skater sitting with him in K&C.

Yup, also wondered and questioned why Zanni was with him in Sheffield when other coaches definitely could have been there with him.

I think it’s a good move, even with his GPF qualification. The Egna environment seems to be really positive and supportive.
