What?! I didn’t even know she was pregnant! Congrats to her
Happy news! Congratulations! 🥳

I wasn’t aware that she had remarried or was engaged! Looking forward to a nice extended-family photo (grandpa Danny Kwan and all)! Auntie Karen & her children, too. :)

She posted pictures on IG with a boyfriend in September. Interesting coincidence -- they were visiting a Greek island and the name Kalista is of Greek origin.
It might be of Greek origin but nobody in Greece is named Kalista.

Congratulations to Michelle! Not everyone wants to make their pregnancy public and that's perfectly fine.

Huge congrats to Michelle!

She's 41.5 years old, and her post mentions fertility challenges and a long journey. Although she looks forever young and advances in medicine are making later pregnancies possible, she's still in the broadly "now or never" age group. She may have decided to do this on her own, independent of the relationship she's in, and :respec: to her if she did. (The questions about "who's the father" are a bit :shuffle: if you ask me.)

Regardless, there's no "rule" that the baby can't have the mother's surname. I know plenty of non-skating people who have used the mother's surname, including married couples, for various reasons. And there are plenty of cases in skating where the child has the mother's surname -- e.g., Skyler Grishuk and Ilia Malinin for two examples. Both of their fathers are known, and in Ilia's case involved. There's nothing unusual about this, and people shouldn't be making any assumptions.

What exciting news! Congratulations to Michelle. I was just thinking I’d last seen her in the news as a part of Biden’s administration and not for a pregnancy, I’m glad that I’m not totally out of it and had somehow missed it. Good on her for doing things her way!

Sorry, Louis, you are mistaken regarding Oksana's daughter. Legally, Skyler goes with the hyphenated last name Grishuk-Carrillo, including for her professional tennis career. So they have nothing to do with the discussion of the Kween's baby naming decision.

I did not know that Skyler's legal name is different, but she seems to go to by "Skyler Grishuk" or "Skyler Marie Grace Grishuk" in any media over which she has control -- e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Princeton pages, various other media reports. I can't find any reference to "Grishuk-Carrillo" except for ESPN and (interestingly) a court petition from 2003 to change Skyler's name. Maybe ESPN has a requirement to use legal names. Gymnast Tasha Schwikert (who also used her mother's name, despite parents who were together) was required to be Tasha Schwikert-Warren (her legal name) in a few places.

In any case, the point remains that women can choose to give their children their own name (or a hyphenated one) regardless of marital and relationship status. Michelle's daughter having the last name "Kwan" implies nothing.

At first I thought this was a different Michelle Kwan, but I guess not?

I'll guess she'll manage caring for her infant and her new posting in Belize okay. The Kween can afford nannies, that's for sure.

I'm surprised news of her pregnancy was never revealed. She must have gone into hiding once she started to show.

In the same Instagram post, Michelle included a “growing belly” montage! Click the right arrow on the baby’s photo.
