Sadly, it's the standard Hollywood trajectory.

Love Interest > Best Friend > Mother of Love Interest > Nun

January Jones was on Mad Men for 7 seasons as the wife of Don Draper, and the mother of Sally and Bobby, who would have been around 15 and 12 when the series ended 5 years ago. It's not a stretch for her to play a mom of older teens/young adults.

The older daughter was supposed to have been born when she wasa young skater and ended her career. We’re told that character is 21. So it’s fine in that regard. Except Jones looks young and the actress playing the daughter looks the 27 that she is. They basically look in the same age range so it doesn’t work well for me.

Well, she is too old to play a competitive skater, unless someone greenlights a Zoe Jones biopic.

Anyway, Jones is old enough to play the mom of a 21 year old. Kiefer Sutherland was 34 when 24 premiered, and I read somewhere that there were concerns about how believable he would be as the father of a teenager until someone pointed out that he was, in fact, the father of a teenager
January Jones is playing someone's mom? Wow...
January Jones turns 42 on Sunday.
Sadly, it's the standard Hollywood trajectory.

Love Interest > Best Friend > Mother of Love Interest > Nun
January Jones played a mom through 7 seasons of Mad Men raising 3 children.

As a V&M fan, I didn't want to mention the heavy, heavy... inspiration. I'm glad I wasn't alone noticing that, even before a wish.com version of the dress showed up on screen.

Sadly, it's the standard Hollywood trajectory.

Love Interest > Best Friend > Mother of Love Interest > Nun

Now, now... some women get to sneak in some Mrs. Robinson roles, maybe the wife of a doddering middle-aged man-child, definitely the "mom" supporting roles, THEN Mother of Love Interest, Nun-- and finally, old woman providing creepy/timely/"profound" wisdom with a weight on horror movies.

Anton: So we have little problem, Da? We skip little problem and go ...straight???... to big problem. And what is big problem coach? Smilkov and Brushkin. Who? Smilkov and Brushkin. Last night they win European championship. Perfect scores. Contest is over. Hello, Soviet surprise package. Goodbye gold medal. Of course, there is possible solution, but is probably too dangerous.

  I love The Cutting Edge so, so much. Perfect, perfect scene. Thank you for the memory. And Smilkov & Brushkin... played by the very not-Russian Christine "Tuffy" Hough & Doug "eternal Hockey Hair" Ladret. (Loved them)

I wish Jenn had been the lead character in the show. I find her much more likable and interesting.

YES!But if there's more seasons, and it's already a bit soapy, maybe we'll have a more "Grey's Anatomy" balance where many other characters are as featured as the initial series star. Otherwise, the million storylines is sloppy considering some of the writing is pretty decent. But I haven't mainlined a series in awhile...

What rink was this filmed in?

"Spinning Out" was filmed in Canada with on ice pre-production, coaching and choreography by Sarah Kawahara.

Ontario's Blue Mountain Village ski resort is the location for the ski lodge scenes etc.

The ice rink where much of the show's action takes place, called the Pinecrest Ice Arena in Spinning Out, is the Teen Ranch Ice Corral in the Orangeville area of Ontario

"In Episode 3, Kat and Justin (Evan Roderick) bond over meatloaf in a diner named Wally's Restaurant. This is a real diner found in Mississauga, Canada."

Honestly, I know Ontario doesn't really stand out for its scenery compared to other provinces, but these two areas in particular (and the area immediately around Orangeville) are really stunning.

Another fun fact. In episode 2 the young boy who is held to spy on how well the main character lands her triple toe (She doesn’t) and then he is later is filmed skating, is Grayson Long Canada’s new PreNovice men’s champ. Brian Orser is his coach. Based on some of his kiss & cry antics at various competitions, he appears to have lots of personality.

I watched the first three episodes last night and really got into it. I have no expectations and don't get hung up on detail about the skating stuff but at least they haven't dumbed it down. I think the story about mental illness is actually quite effective. I do like the actress playing Kat and her friend is a hoot. Plus I like what the coach named the cat.

I binge watched it over two days .. it’s a perfect drama for a good binge! Hope there is another season

Fun fact: Amanda Zhou, who plays Jenn on the show, used to be a figure skater in her teens. She never made it to Canadian Nationals, but competed at sectionals up to junior level. I don't think she often advertises this fact in her bio since she quit skating to concentrate on acting, but I knew her personally when she was a young teen and had no idea she had become an actor (as I haven't seen her since she was around 14) - when I started watching, I immediately paused and said to myself, "Wait, I know that girl!" and then looked her up on IMDB.

I figured she had some sort of skating background since she did her own skating in the show and did it well!

I will give props to the show for choosing good classical music for the programs - Beethoven's 7th, Rach 2, Schez.

The pair partner who went from Justin to Johnny is a clockwise rotator. Would a top pairs guy want to do mirror pairs in this day and age?

And methinks Johnny would get a costume violation. Green makeup?!

How did Kat pass all those pairs tests so quickly? And compete at Sectionals with no training time?

Kudos to no spotlights at qualifying comps like most cheesy skating shows. And I love the family drama. I'm invested.

I loved Make It Or Break It as a very casual gymnastics fan. So I'm pretending I'm a casual skating fan/non-skater and enjoyed this a lot.

As entertainment, there were a lot of things I liked about the show. Its storytelling style is extremely blunt, so if you're looking for something with a lot of nuance, that's not this, but it does have some ideas it's chewing on (particularly with regards to hereditary mental illness).

I assume they got a clockwise double for Leah so she'd match Johnny. I doubt they thought anyone would notice lol

Spinning out is not about figure skating. It's about a group of people always saying the wrong thing and taking the wrong decision.

I actually enjoyed it. Omg Kat looks like a twin of Tessa’s. I didn’t knit pick the skating though.

I finished it the other night. I really enjoyed it and hope there is a second season.

I thought Kat looked just like Tessa, especially with her hair down and in the dress that looks like Tessa’s Moulin Rouge dress.

I’m in episode 8 and I keep wondering if the lead (Kat) got the role because she looks so much like one of her skating doubles (Evelyn Walsh) or did it happen the other way around.

I am loving some of the secondary characters even more than the lead characters.

I especially love Jen, Serena, Mandy and Marcus.

I agree. Good casting choices. There are also the goofy brothers who just pop in and out but always entertaining.

Don't know if anyone has paid attention to the soundtrack but some of the background music has been good. And I noticed a couple of Aussie artists in there including Middle Kids.

Watched the whole thing during one long travel day. The heroine reminded me more
of Ashley Wagner than of Tessa. It is melodramatic but also great fun. Though they tried to introduce as many hot button issues as possible, they are all true to life. The show is more about dealing with manic depression than skating but I think it is a great reminder that life happens even as people strive for excellence. As
long as there are not too many glaring mistakes about skating, I would not care... Decades of watching movies about music trained me that filmmaking is almost always approximate.
