Rippon is a complicated, outspoken, unlikely Olympian. He's also gay.

I hadn't realized he was deaf as a baby. However, my favorite excerpt might be: "Rippon has been asked so many times what it’s like to be an openly gay Olympian that by now he’s crafted the perfect response: It’s like being a straight athlete with better eyebrows."

"But another series of setbacks nearly cost him a spot on the Olympic team. He broke his foot in early 2017 and spent much of the remaining season in rehabilitation. He said he used the time to study the Olympic qualification criteria, and by the time he came back, was courting reporters, talking up his chances and checking off every requirement.

To hit the penultimate requirement, qualification to the Grand Prix Final, Rippon went to extreme lengths. He came down hard on a quadruple Lutz attempt in the opening moments of his free program and dislocated his shoulder. His injury came only minutes after another skater incurred the same injury, withdrew from the competition and was sent to the hospital.

That wasn’t going to work for Rippon. He resorted with what he had learned from watching survivalist videos on YouTube, pausing his routine briefly to pop his shoulder back in while still on the ice.

That particular maneuver allowed him to survive a fourth-place finish at the U.S. championships to make the three-man Olympic team. Rippon insisted he took “full responsibility” for the poor performance in his long program and chided a reporter who suggested that flash photography might have had something to do with it. “No, baby,” he said.

I found out Adam was born deaf several years ago because it's mentioned on his Wiki page. He had surgery as a baby and the problem was corrected. Amazing. Adam hasn't really talked about it much, because he was too young to remember and it likely did not impact him growing up. He was more impacted by how different he felt for other reasons, as he has described...

Go Adam!!! :cheer2:

^^The fact that Adam was born deaf and that he's a competitive figure skater is amazing. It's no secret that your hearing and sense of balance are connected. I have excellent hearing and trip over dots in the carpet, so I am doubly impressed!

I just posted these articles in his fan/cheer thread... they offer insight into his family dynamics and growing up years:

His mother was interviewed for this: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/a47860/adam-rippon-mom-kelly-rippon-interview/

His younger brother and sister (the two of his siblings who made the trip to Korea) were interviewed for a feature piece in his hometown's local paper: http://thetimes-tribune.com/sports/still-just-adam-fame-success-hasn-t-changed-rippon-1.2301267
Excerpts:
Brady Rippon, 24, has been on the ice in skates only a handful of times.
As he sat in the stands at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York, in November during the 2017 Skate America competition, he could feel his palms start to sweat. He stared at the ice, and there was Adam, every eye in the historic building, and the literal spotlight, on him.
“I sort of figured I would be prepared for it, because I’ll watch it live on TV when he competes,” Brady said. “But being there, in person, is just so different. I think when I saw him do his short program, it was the most tense I had ever been. ... It gave me a huge sense of the gravity of these moments and the incredible pressure that goes with these competitions.”
The oldest of Adam’s younger brothers, 26-year-old Tyler, is a law student at the University of Indiana. Brady is a graduate student at Columbia University. The two sisters, Jordan, 21, and Dagny, 19, are college students, an accomplished artist at Millersville University and a business administration major at the University of Scranton, respectively. Youngest brother Sawyer, 17, is a student at Abington Heights, an aspiring animator with his own YouTube channel.
“We were always just taught never to let others influence or make us feel ashamed of what we’re passionate about,” Dagny said. “One of the big things (Adam) has taught me is that nothing you want to pursue is ridiculous. He’s a figure skater; that obviously wasn’t a practical career to pursue. But he taught me that if you love something enough, you can make it work.”

There was a skater in the senior men's event at the 1980 US National Championships who was deaf.

Standing by the boards in competition, David Michalowski's coach used to visually cue him with the music changes as he performed.

There was a pretty fluffy article about Adam (e.g. it doesn't go into extreme detail on his intellectual critique of traditional catechism) in my local paper today and this quote stood out to me:
"I know what it's like to be a young kid and feel out of place," he said. "To want to share your ideas and feel like people might not like them. I spent a lot of time worrying what people thought of me and soon as I was able to let go of those doubts, that's when I was able to find my voice. I hope that in the process of me sharing who I am with everyone, that they can find their voice too."

Nice to read something positive but honest in the midst of various Olympic anxieties and meltdowns.

As probably the only person in the (FS universe) who cares about Adam’s hometown links, thank you @Sylvia for the Times Tribune article. I am really glad to see all the support in NE Penna for Adam:cheer2:

My local paper, 70 miles south of the Rippon homestead, finally figured it out, and although they are only running wire stories, they are at least saying “Scranton’s Rippon” in the headlines and a copy editor throws Scranton in the story every once in a while;)

I care about Adam's hometown links too. :) The first time I recall hearing about Adam was at the Liberty Open in Aston, PA. It's called the Philadelphia International competition or something like that now. Adam certainly did not look "big bottomed" like that coach mentioned in the eating disorder article said. He was skating to the Addams Family soundtrack and was a beautiful young skater then. That was probably the same competition where I sat next to Doug Razzano's parents; they seemed pleasantly surprised that a skating fan without a kid competing would go there to watch. Who would have thought Adam would still be competing and at the Olympics in 2018?

Here's an amusing article about how a game developer named Adam Rippon who is enjoying skater Adam's current Olympic "celebrity" (or notoriety): https://kotaku.com/game-developer-adam-rippon-is-having-a-good-time-right-1822964795
[The other] Rippon says he’s having a blast.
I love it,” Rippon told me via text chat yesterday. “I might get tired of the constant tweets if they keep up for more than a few weeks, but I’m having fun with it so far! Like Reese Witherspoon tweeting about Adam Rippon made my year.”
Game designer Adam Rippon says he first encountered figure skater Adam Rippon on Myspace about a decade ago. “It’s hazy, but I remember our conversation as being a ‘hey, I’m Adam Rippon! No way! I’m Adam Rippon! I make video games! I figure skate! Wow we’re both so different lol!’ kind of chat,” he said. “Seemed like a real nice kid, and he had Olympic aspirations even then as I recall.”
ETA:

@el henry and @livetoskate, Adam has graduated from the sports to the news section of the Scranton Times-Tribune with this article: http://thetimes-tribune.com/news/all-eyes-on-adam-rippon-a-hometown-hero-in-clarks-summit-1.2301751

I hope somebody will modify the name of this thread to reflect this new info.

"Rippon is a complicated, outspoken, unlikely an Olympian. He's also a game developer (with a body like a potato-powered sex sloth)"

Now THAT is a thread title that would get clicks! :D

Figure skater Adam Rippon sent ripples through Pyeongchang, South Korea during the Winter Olympics this past Sunday when the nimble 28-year-old won a bronze medal after his acclaimed performance in the men’s singles free skate.

Sigh.

Lord, soon half the threads on the home page will be Adam-centric. Might need to merge, soon into some sort of Adam-mania fest.

Look, his costume is nice, he's pretty and has lovely programs. I do enjoy watching him.
But it's soon time to get back our perspective.
He's the USA #3, his technical content would be seen as competitive at junior worlds and he's a top 10 threat here only.

Throughout the last few seasons I have admired how hard Adam has worked to maximize and showcase his talent, but I'm quickly becoming so over him and how overexposed he is. His interviews are becoming a bit much, as well, as he's sensing every word he utters is a brand building exercise.

Love the guy but I'm kinda done. Unfollowed him in social media bc I just can't.
Happy for him to get exposure but my preference would be that it be to the level consistent with other athletes with the same outcome potential.

I think it's great. Give me more stories on American figure skaters! It's the Olympics after all. It's that magical time every 4 years when for 4-6 weeks people actually give a crap about this sport. Let the media have their fun.

I think it's great that Adam is getting this attention despite the fact he's not in contention for a medal. I think it's really good for Nathan as well. With people focusing so much on Adam it gives Nathan some much needed breathing room. I also like that Adam's skating, which is gorgeous, is getting attention despite him being quad-less. Truth is he is likely nearing the end of his career. He'll have to make decisions about where his life goes after skating. Perhaps the exposure he gets during these Olympics will open up other avenues for him to do other things once he retires.

Having listened to decades of US athletes giving cut and paste answers based on media training, Adam is a nice breath of fresh air.

I am sure more than anyone, Adam is aware that on a technical level, he is not competitive with quad kings like Fernandez, Hanyu, Uno and Jin.

However, with his elegant artistry, he is enjoying his Olympic moment, and bringing something different to the table.

I'm all for it.
