Running into a famous person?

But the interactions that usually rank with me are the smaller musicians I've seen over the years, usually Canadian, at small venues. I JUST met Bif Naked a few weeks ago and my inner 16-year-old was over the moon. Also jealous at how goddamn good she looked and sounded in 2024 compared to 1998. I'm so grateful for experiences like that, and opportunities to thank certain musicians for their music that affected me.
I've heard and read so many stories about how nice Bif Naked is. I've literally never sought them out, they just pop up sometimes and it makes me so happy every time because she was the artist of my teenage years.

As many of you, I've met a bunch of skaters when I used to go to shows, as well as a local pro skating event that Scott Williams created and Brian Boitano hosted. After one of the competitions, I ended up at the reception/party with the skaters and others, and ended up dancing next to choreographer Brian Wright (RIP), who was vogue-ing it up to the max and was such fun. My friend had given him chocolate roses the day before and he was so astonished at being given a gift. I think maybe he was used to standing with his skaters and them getting gifts, so when he realized the gift was for him, his mouth dropped open and he just kept thanking her over and over. Such a sweet interaction.

Negative skater interactions were with Tara Lipinski and Peter Carruthers. In fact, Peter was so full of himself with the person in line in front of me that I looked at him and said, "Never mind, I'm going back to my seat," turned around and left. I'm sure he couldn't have cared less.

Aside from skaters, the one celeb that I met the most often was singer David Cook. What a goof (in a good way). He's funny, self-deprecating and very humble. His shows are good as well.

As much as I am not a fan of her, I did find former Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot to be very polite and nice when I ran into her at the restaurant next to my office building. She was running for mayor at the time.

One couple in our Condo Association met Bob New hart and have a picture somewhere. Their daughter was going to go through the pictures.

She said Newhart was really short, and delightful to talk to.

Another neighbor told me about meeting Joe Biden on a train going to Delware.

I've met a few famous people because I was at their concert, so I figured it doesn't count as "running into" them. I've met and chatted with Counting Crows several times, met Art Alexakis from Everclear, I somehow ended up bar hopping with Fuel after one concert, I sang on stage with Bryan Adams twice... But those seem like almost planned and not accidental meetings. LOL!

My friend's sister is married to a pianist, Joseph Kalichstein. His extended crowd included Yoyo Ma, Daniel Barenboin, Jacqueline Dupre, Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson as well as the godfather of their two sons is Itzhak Perlman among others. Another friend is the pianist Emanuel Ax whose concert was at the Manhattan YMHA. Afterwards, my friend said, "let's go backstage and say hello to Manny". She chatted with him easily. I om the other hand was so in awe of his prowess, I just stood there. He turned to me and said, "And who is this?" I remember thinking, does it really matter? but didn't verbalize it. I introduced myself and told him how wonderful he was.

I’ve run into some famous people but one had an impact on my son. Son #2 was in high school and while watching his game I noticed a man chatting with him, obviously showing him some tips. I thought nothing of it, probably just another specialist the coach has sometimes. One game the man sat next to me, chatted about my son, told me that he likes what he sees and can really help get him recruited to a big time college. He already told my son to think about it. A couple of weeks later my husband was able to attend our son’s game. He saw the man with our son and Hubby said, “Wow! You know who that guy is with him?” I thought he was a helper. Apparently I know NOTHING about baseball because that kind man was former A’s Ricky Henderson! Turns out he’s good friends with the head coach.

That's a great story. Rickey is an absolute baseball legend!!!

I felt so stupid not knowing who I was chatting with all that time. 😅
Eh, I wouldn’t know who he is by sight but I recognize the name. 😊 I’d be in the same boat. The closest I have come to anyone famous is seeing Jim Henson at Disney World and (I think) waiting in line with my family for Don Mattingly's autograph.

Seems appropriate to share this story on the anniversary of the Mag 7 winning their team gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics....

I worked at McDonald's here in Cincy through high school and two years before the Mag 7 was even a thing, a very friendly and polite young woman came into my store to purchase a milkshake. None of my coworkers knew who she was but being a big gymnastics fan, I knew right away although I didn't say anything directly to her. Now I enjoy getting to tell the story of how I once sold a milkshake to Amanda Borden. :D
