RIP, Jimmy Carter.

Unbelievably, Joe Biden is now the oldest living US president. Has it ever happened before (since the 1800s?) that the incumbent president was also the oldest living?

Answering my own question, sort of: It looks like Nixon was both the incumbent and the ONLY living from 1973-74, despite being only 61. Eisenhower (1969), Truman (1972), and LBJ (January '73) all died during his tenure.

I think Joe Biden is the first US president to be the incumbent and oldest living, while other presidents are alive. Hoover came close, but was a month younger than Coolidge, who died in '33 (and made Hoover another incumbent and only living).

And the incoming President is second oldest beating Bush and Clinton by a couple of months.

RIP President Carter.

I was too young to really know much about his active presidency. But I have watched and appreciated his life post-precidency. What an amazing man, and what an amazing life filled with love, honor and service to others. A good, decent and humble human being, and someone I aspire to be like in my every day life. Rest in peace with Rosalynn, Mr. Carter.

RIP Mr. President. He and Rosalynn did Habitat for Humanity building up until his 90s. He was a true humanitarian. It's such a shame his battle with Ted Kennedy cost him his 2nd term. The Democrats truly shot themselves in the foot and gave Reagan the greatest opportunity of his life due to their infighting. And, he gave the biggest raise federal employees ever got when he left office. It made a huge difference to VA employees. I was always grateful that he opted to bring us up to the private sector in salary.

President Biden: "[T]o all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning ā€“ the good life ā€“ study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility. He showed that we are great nation because we are a good people."

If he did nothing but the Camp David accords he would have been a good president. That peace treaty saved a lot of lives.

I worked for his former press secretary, Jody Powell, for 3 years at the end of the ā€˜80s. I learned just how hard it was to represent power at the highest level from listening to his stories. Carter wasnā€™t perfect but he was better than most of his successors. RIP.

Reagan (b. 1911) was older than Nixon (b. 1913), Ford (b. 1913), and Carter (b. 1924), all of whom were alive when he took office.

Just saw this on Substack where Robert Reich paid his respects. President Carter was a good president, and a great humanitarian. We have lost a very good person and leader. We need more like him. RIP President Carter. We will miss you.

Jimmy Carter was a mensch, so was Rosalynn. A man who quietly lived his faith, never demanded anybody believe as he does. RIP, President Carter, reunited with your beloved Rosalynn. Your memories shall be for a blessing.

I loved this story Jonathan Alter told about Rosalynn Carter:

I saw Rosalynn Carter angry only twice. Both occasions involved Ronald Reagan, who had crushed Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election, and both reflected her passion and decency.

The first concerned a free public swimming pool in the Cartersā€™ hometown, Plains, Ga., that they built in the 1950s. She recounted to me during an interview that when Mr. Reagan was president, local conservatives turned it into a whites-only private club. Mr. Reagan made people ā€œcomfortable with their prejudices,ā€ she snapped.
The second related to the landmark Mental Health Systems Act of 1980, a major investment in community mental health centers that Mrs. Carter spearheaded with the help of her husbandā€™s other archrival, Senator Edward Kennedy. Sitting in her office at the Carter Center in 2015, she grew upset as she described how Mr. Reagan had defunded the ambitious program, leaving tens of thousands of people untreated. It took 30 years ā€” until Obamacare ā€” before federal funding for community mental health treatment centers was fully resurrected, with her help.

Just incredibly decent people who wanted to make the world better.
