"Maestro"....A boring movie about an interesting man. 'Nuf said. Cooper and Mulligan were brilliant, but it wasn't enough to save the movie for me.
I got bored in spite of the art direction, costumes, direction.

It’s the same thing that always happens now with movie musicals! The studios feel they have to hide the musical part because so many hate musicals but then you are left with very familiar scenes that look like rote remake! I know Wicked is very different from Oz but in the trailer it looked very much like it. Plus Oz is a musical! lol I’d wager you wouldn’t have the same resistance to songs in an Oz story. There is one note in the whole Wicked trailer.

Yeah, after Dune Part 2, the third installment of Deadpool is probably my most-anticipated movie of the year. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds sharing a movie screen promises to be a must-see.

The only movie I have seen is 'Oppenheimer' and it was very disappointing. I feel it is very overrated, possibly because of the historical significance of the title character. The direction, screenplay and editing were the main reason this movie does Not work for me. It felt like it was created with the goal of winning the Oscar. I felt that it will get the Oscar but not because it truly deserves it.
Thank you for such a thoughtful review. Honestly, the directing, writing, and editing are all why I never liked Christopher Nolan films.

Robert Downey Jr. Deserves a supporting actor Oscar, but he may not get it just because of the way Oscars are given.
I disagree (not about him deserving one, but about not getting it). I think this may just be his year -- though I have my doubts about Cillian Murphy getting Best Actor. My money's on Giamatti.

I really enjoyed Oppenheimer and meant to see it a second time, but did not get around to it.

"I Think We're Alone Now," with Peter Dinklage, is a different take on the post-apocalyptic genre. Dinklage plays Del, who thinks he's the last person on Earth until he meets Grace, played by Elle Fanning. Their interaction makes the movie: it's less about the apocalypse and more about what it means to find connection in loneliness. The film's slow pace might not be for everyone, but it allows for a deep dive into the characters' emotions, backed by great performances from Dinklage and Fanning. If you're into movies that are more about reflecting on human connections than action, this one's a gem.

Oppenheimer is masterfully done. It took incredible skill to handle and weave together all those storylines. The performances, the effects, the handling of the ethical dilemmas, everything was impressive. That said, I'd say it's one of those movies you admire, not love. Though at times it sucks you in, it is overall (understandably) grim and cold. I can easily see it winning Best Picture, though.

One thing I did love was appearances by some actors I've really enjoyed over the years: Gregory Jbara, Tim DeKay, and Harry Groener (no, I'm not a "Buffy" fan, I saw him in Crazy for You on Broadway! :) ).

And they did a remarkable job of making Murphy look like Oppenheimer. And also like Benoit Richaud. :D

Also waiting for what happens at BAFTA.

I’m thinking Best Actor is probably between Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers). Best Actress is probably between Emma Stone (Poor Things) and Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon).

Yes Stone has all the late momentum but everyone can see all the nominations for Killers so that helps her. No Gladstone at BAFTA possibly because of jury makes that a Stone won. So it’s all SAG there.

Update: Here are the winners of tonight’s 2024 BAFTA Awards.

Henry Cavill is rumoured to be joining the MCU. He has been fan casted as Captain Britain for a while now.
The man is already everywhere right now, with two movie projects this year ("Argylle," which is already out, and "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" which is set for April) and two more in the hopper (the "Highlander" reboot and as-yet-unnamed Warhammer movie). His leaving "The Witcher" may have had nothing to do with writer disputes, as is the predominant rumor.

It's just been added to Peacock, so I'm finally going to watch it (for the first time!).
Me too. The movie's run time is just a bit too long for me to sit through in a theater, so I've been waiting for it to come out on a streaming service, and yay! I just happen to have Peacock right now.

Ack. I didn't mean to post back-to-back. Sorry.

I saw the Oscar-nominated documentary short films today at a local theater. My husband and I both really liked The Last Repair Shop about artists who repair musical instruments for Los Angeles public schools, one of the last school systems in the country to still provide used instruments to students free of charge. The story blossomed into something very special. I hope to see the live-action shorts in the next few days.

Has anyone watched Pedro Almodóvar‘s gay western “strange way of life” short film with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal yet? I see it’s available for 2.99 on a couple platforms, including Amazon. I think I will finally purchase this. Even though it’s only 31 minutes I’m so excited.

It’s beyond bizarre….. It was not nominated at this year‘s Oscars for best short. My friends over at Universal and paramount were Bewildered as well as it’s clearly the best short film of the year they said, that nothing even comes close.

Watching YouTube reviews of it….I guess it was released theatrically along with his other short film with Tilda Swinton called “the human voice”. I live in LA you think I would’ve seen this in theaters somewhere… I did not notice it anywhere.

I can't watch award shows; the fake banter makes me twitchy. Rooting from afar for Gladstone and Giamatti (though Murphy and Cooper were also very good!).
