Olympian Meryl Davis headlines fundraiser for fantastic figure skating program in Detroit

As Winter Olympics continue, there is a program teaching girls more than just skating in northwest Detroit, and it has an Olympic champion's support.

Some of them had no idea how to skate. But now? Five years later?

Their improvement is inspiring, both on the ice and off.

“It's just really beautiful,” said Cassidy Conley, 16, of Detroit, a member of Figure Skating in Detroit, a program that brings figure skating to inner-city girls. “How much we can grow and learn with each other. It's just amazing.”

Fifty-two figure skaters train every week at the Jack Adams Memorial Arena in northwest Detroit. But it’s so much more than a skating program. It’s a mix of figure skating, tutoring and leadership training. The goal is not to make Olympic ice skaters. It’s to produce well-rounded student-athletes. To ignite a passion and to offer opportunities.

“Figure skating is an expensive sport,” said Meryl Davis, the Olympic gold medal ice dancer, who is on the program’s leadership committee and a member of the champions committee. “It hasn't been a particularly diverse sport historically, so we focus on giving access to girls of color in the city of Detroit.”

Davis will headline a fundraiser for the program on March 5 at Campus Martius.

I haven't been back here in checks notes I don't know how long. But this past winter Olympics has got me missing Meryl and Charlie out there. I'm still searching for a team to hook me like they do!

I really can't wait to see what Charlie does with his coaching and choreography. One day soon he'll be at the boards or in the kiss and cry with his athletes (and then I might cry because I'll feel very old).

I am waiting for the Meryl is pregnant post. So silly I know... but I would love to read good news...

So not our business—I know you mean well but pregnancy is so personal and individual! I know many women who don’t have a first until after 40; others who struggle with infertility and ultimately go alternative routes; and, many women (even ones in relationships) who simply decide to be child free (or, maybe just stick with fur babies)!

There are so many different ways to be a mother now so, I always say, best not to speculate—even though I’m sure Meryl would make an awesome MOM at whatever time and in whatever ways she ultimately decides to be one.

What a cute video! Knowing what we know about how they exceeded expectations (boy, did they ever!) it's such a treat to see them at the beginning. Loved seeing their moms, all of them were so gracious to me as a fan over the years. I saw them many times in person, my special memory is seeing them at a show in Jacksonville, Fl in 2014...my sister and I had tickets for the show and this was not long after the death of my husband, I got a message from Meryl's dad that she had left a wristband for me at the box office to come to the aftershow meet and greet. Meryl and Charlie were so sweet to me there, my sis took pics and it just warmed my heart that they cared to do that for me. I will never forget it.
