Judith Dombrowski interviewed Junhwan Cha in Vancouver the day after he finished 9th (2nd in SP, 11th in FS) at Skate Canada Int'l (Oct. 29):

Chaeyeon Kim won the silver medal at Skate Canada Int'l :) - Golden Skate's photo of her in the mixed zone after her FS: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cy9WHiMvfk0/

“I was sooo nervous today. Even more than yesterday. I didn’t skate clean but I am very happy with the result of winning a silver medal!
It’s so nice to compete along Kaori. She is such a strong and powerful skater. And also a very, very nice person!”

Cha had no chance to make the final, and whatever is going on is probably not going to improve by competing again. Good decision to stay home, stay rested, and maintain the training schedule. The Koreans have to compete so many times next month that it's not worth it for him to spend energy on a Grand Prix event.

Shin Jia's LP is truly no worse than most of the seniors this season  I thought she deserved a larger PCS gap over Shimada, even though I do believe Shimada rightly won with her tech content.

This season I find myself truly appreciating her presentation. Programs are kind of dull, but she skated beautifully. Hard to beat someone who skated only slightly less completely but with 2 ultra-Cs.

That was not a great skate because he was not healthy at the time, and stripped down the content because he had to compete to have any chance of going to Worlds this season, and receive funding from the federation.
But, it still shows a lot of willpower and ability at the moment, no?

I think the only thing that Cha's competing at the Korean ranking competition demonstrates is that the Korean Skating Union is a terribly run organization when they make their only medal contender in the men's event - reigning World Silver Medalist at that - compete when what he needed to be doing was focusing on his recovery.

What a crummy women's season this is turning out to be. So many of the best female athletes, I think, had a rough summer injury-wise and didn't quite make it back to shape for their skates on the GP. And in Higuchi's case, she's running behind due to needing to regain her skating form after a lengthier period of semi-retirement. But I really had hope that we could have a strong women's Worlds final flight with these skaters coming on strong at the end of the season. Instead, they aren't getting out of Nationals and we're going to miss out on so much that could have been, IMO.

Higuchi is not Korean (this thread).

As for which skaters are sent to 2024 ISU Figure Skating Championship events:

2024 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships
Determined by the results of the 2023 Korean Figure Skating President's Cup Ranking Competition amongst age-eligible skaters with technical minimums, followed by KSU review.

2024 ISU World Figure Skating Championships
Determined by the results of the Korea Figure Skating Championships 2024 amongst age-eligible skaters with technical minimums, followed by KSU review (Note: The same skater/team CANNOT participate in BOTH the 2024 ISU World Figure Skating Championships AND the World Junior Figure Skating Championships)

2024 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships
Determined by the results of the Korea Figure Skating Championships 2024 amongst age-eligible skaters with technical minimums, followed by KSU review (Note: The same skater/team CANNOT participate in BOTH the 2024 ISU World Figure Skating Championships AND the World Junior Figure Skating Championships)

For Dance, Kim/Lee to WJC, Lim/Quan to 4CC and WC, no question.

For Singles, I would be very surprised if the team wasn't
  • 4CC: Junhwan Cha / Juheon Lim / Younghyun Cha
  • WC: Junhwan Cha / Sihyeong Lee / Hyungyeom Kim
  • WJC: Minkyu Seo / Jaekeun Lee
for the Men (NOTE: Hyungyeom Kim is participating in the Winter Youth Olympic Games, for which the scheduling conflicts with 4CC IIRC) and
  • 4CC: Chaeyeon Kim / Seoyeong Wi / Haein Lee
  • WC: Haein Lee / Chaeyeon Kim / Young You
  • WJC: Jia Shin / Yuseong Kim / Yujae Kim
for the Women.

Technically these do go through KSU review, but given their track record this seems like a formality at best and the Korean entry for ISU Championship events have pretty much always followed the order of placement for the respective qualifying events amongst eligible skaters.

FWIW, the commentators on KBS1 said that Junhwan Cha / Sihyeong Lee / Hyungyeom Kim for the Men and Haein Lee / Chaeyeon Kim / Young You for the Women will be going to Worlds. If not confirmation, at the very least indicative that there is a high level of confidence amongst insiders that that order of placement in the respective qualifying events is definitive.

How are the ranking competitions and nationals factored in if Young You and Seoyeong Wi are making teams even though they cumulatively finished 7th and 9th?
