LOL, if you say so.

Yuma is a great skater but Ilia is no slouch and is closing the gap. It's .10 difference, not something massive. Additionally, it would not have materially changed the outcome or the point spread between the two of them today.
lol i say so

look i loved ilia's program and it does a great job of showing off the good parts of his skating. Very happy and can't wait to see how it improves through the season. Yuma is one of the greatest skaters i've ever seen though. His glide and edgework is just that much better. I'm not saying he should be above ilia but his skating skills should 100% be higher.

At the risk of ‘but you don’t travel to competitions on the norm, you don’t know what you’re talking about’ (mind you having actually skated first and foremost, having done double jumps and skated on sessions with 15-20 other advanced skaters for quite a few years), Ilia still has a long way to go. I wouldn’t say he’s closing the gap. I think he’s learned his posture and technique and it would take a tremendous amount of work to change it at this point. It is what it is and his points are earned from other aspects of his skating. It doesn’t mean he’s terrible, but Kagiyama is an absolute master at skating skills and should be properly rewarded for it rather than going back to 2009 PCS where Lysacek, Joubert, and Chan were somehow deemed more or less equal, while Takahiko Kozuka was always playing catch-up when he was among the best in that respect.

And no, I don’t need a lecture on how Ilia doing the 4A ‘must mean’ he has great skating skills. Not one person ever argued Tim Goebel, Brandon Mroz, Artur Dmitriev, any of the group of Chengjiang Li, Zhengxin Guo, or Boyang Jin, or any of the Russian women quadsters being advanced in jumping during their time meant that their skating skills were brilliant. Because in every. single. above. case….. they weren’t anywhere near.

I agree with Rukia and Tony, however, I will add that Malinin is checking the boxes for skating skills fairly well. He uses multi-directional skating, he’s in control of his movement over the blade, he is generating fairly efficient speed, etc. Kagiyama is better, particularly at glide and flow, but this isn’t a Samarin situation.

Also, compositionally, it looked like Malinin had more transitions in his program, a different component than Skating Skills, but we know the various scores can affect each other.

I thought transitions were wrapped into Skating Skills when the PCS were reduced from 5 to 3 categories.

As someone who saw both Ilia and Yuma live at Worlds, Ilia's skating skills are not as good as Yuma's, but I wouldn't put him in the same sentence with that group.

I think transitions are part of the composition score?

I'm not saying Ilia has bad skating skills by any means. I'm just saying they're not as good as Yuma's. And I really did love his short. I think it uses his awkwardness in really good and smart ways. This is exactly the way he needs to go with his programs. I'm excited to see it at skam.

Ilia has exceptional musical skating skills. And he places his tricks (raspberry, etc.) in perfect time to the music. That counts as style. I noticed it 3-4 times today, even with music that I personally don’t love but is tuneful in its own way.

Correct, connections between the elements is part of Compostion.

Ilia does have good breadth of steps, multidirectional skating, and even balance (I think he is capable of controlled and intentional drunk pirate skating). All things considered in how PCS is scored, he’s an 8.75-9.00 on Skating Skills.

Regardless, the fact is Yuma also has those qualities AND exceedingly exceptional clarity of edge and power. He’s 9.75-10.00. Period.

Except in the eyes of the judges. 😵‍💫

I haven't found Kagiyana's SP to watch yet, but I loved Sato's program. Ilia was Ilia, I can't say I see major improvement since last season but I did feel like he improved on the 2nd mark quite a bit then. Plus he's getting the World Champ PCS bonus.

I just watched Ilia and Sato. Both great programs, but Ilia’s angular, modern-dance way of moving is less to my liking than Yuma’s. Sato doesn’t start expressing the music til he’s done jumping.

They’re all excellent and along with Adam and Kao will make the next two seasons exciting. But I loved Yuma’s program the best.

Here you go.

Thank you!!! Weird music edit, but a good early season skate. No real disruption to the program with the 4s error like I was expecting.

Cheung's music is making me sleepy - and I might very well doze for the next hour and a half through these first two groups... Oh, this music is now annoying violin tango music that has me more awake but I still want to doze.

Pretty sure it lasted 45 minutes, too, so hopefully you could nap and be back for the next skater.

Ri - bright turquoise shirt with some silver crystals on the collar, black pants. He wants me to go back to sleep but I won't. I'm here for Elder Selevko, Martynov and Jimmy. I really have no idea what he put out there technically - I think he attempted a 4t to open and it was okay though he did put his free leg down for a moment on the landing, and I saw him put both hands on the ice on a 3a - probably will count as a fall.

I understand why the NK fed wouldn't give their skaters foreign pop music to skate to, but surely they could pick something classical or an inoffensive Latin/world music piece or something. That North Korean composer's excretion was terrible.

In any case, it's nice to see them send a few skaters to Lombardia. I hope the NK team will have a chance to see Bergamo and aren't stuck in their hotel rooms.

A Selevko - all black - thre's some red stoning/crystals on the shoulders of his shirt, front & back, and bright red gloves. Big pop on the opening quad. Oh, it's tango music. Kill me now. It's too early in my morning for this.

This. Times ten if you watched/heard the "music" their pairs team was saddled with.

I'm sure they'll love seeing the countryside between Bergamo and Oberstdorf from the train tomorrow, lol.

Lim - he's in black - his shirt has some sort of galactic airbrushing & crystals on one shoulder coming across the front of the torso. He's landing a bunch of jumps. His music is very doom and gloom but not heavy. It may have also been written by the North Korean composer.

ETA - no, it wasn't - it's just the Interstellar soundtrack by Hans Zimmer but it still didn't do anything for me and I thought it was somewhat monotonous. Again, it may be that it's just too early (or I'm still not fully awake enough) to appreciate any of this stuff, lol.

Daniel also has not updated his ISU bio - but the USFS bios are updated so we know his FS music - "Inside" by Chris Avantgarde and Red Rosamond. I liked his SP better. All this dark music with heavy beats is too obnoxious for words this morning. This costume - another dude who's into bondage, I guess. He landed some stuff, had some issues with some other jumps, has some expression in this choreo seq, ends behind the music after his closing spin, and I'm really happy that music is no longer pounding my head.

Martynov’s got some stuff. If the other inconsistent US men flop, he’s a contender for a Nats medal.

Xavier Vauclin - sapphire blue dress shirt, black pants and oh thank goodness... La La Land - finally some non-dark, obnoxious music. Steps out on the 3A, falls on the next one, then pops the next jump. He may not have the jumps but I can forgive a lot when you pick music that is really good. Also, this is definitely not the actual soundtrack - I know Ryan Gosling's voice on "City of Stars" and that wasn't it, but it's all good still.

Jimmy Ma's wearing a sparkly galaxy shirt he surely bought off of Wish, and it's loose fitting so we're probably going to see some Nathan belly spins from him. Music is Savchenko/Massot's Olympic FS. I missed his opening jumping passes but I LOVE this step sequence - he's really expressing the music so well - kind of modern dance-y. Falls/steps out of the 3a in the second half. This is a really good program for him. Probably his best one ever. If he can go clean, it could be on the podium at Nats.
