Well she won for that hideous "Blue Jasmine" which I despised with every fiber of my being, so despite her loss tonight I don't feel too terribly for her. I'm sure she can commiserate with Meryl Streep on not getting a deserved honor on occasion.
I hated that movie too, my friend and I left halfway. Good to know we weren’t the only ones.

Michelle Yeoh winning means so much to me. Back in 1994, I begged my dad to take me to see Supercop because I just had to see the Jackie Chan movie where they kept featuring this Asian woman kicking ass in the commercial.

Michelle Yeoh was the first Asian actress I ever saw in a real movie theater, and seeing the mostly African-American crowd in New Orleans East (Hong Chau’s hometown too!) decrepit movie theater applauding Michelle Yeoh as she was kicking people’s asses…

I didn’t dare to dream I’d be watching her win an Oscar (after me finding out what the Oscars were years later) even after her triumph in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 29 years after that moment.

I think it was 1994… my memory is getting bad.

I have not seen most pictures that won awards, so it was a rather disappointing show for me.

I will see the winners eventually, but it is more fun to watch if you have seen the movies. I ran out of time.

I turned off the tv because the last speech was too long. Why do they have to cut off those winNing relatively minor awards? They Are just as happy and excited as the big award winners.

Sad that Blanchett doesn’t have Oscar win for Tar! I just can’t remember such a good performance losing when they had other big wins from other groups and critics - even if blanchett already has 2 which I guess was the ultimate factor in her not winning! Theron didn’t have an Oscar. Mirren didn’t have an Oscar.

I have enormous respect for her talent, but no one forced to work with that particular director on that film - so perhaps a little karma.

I have not seen EEAAO but I felt that Cate Blanchett in Tar was perhaps the best performance by an actor/actress I have ever seen. I am disappointed.

Overall, I'm happy with the major winners even if I would have preferred Angela Bassett. Everything Everywhere All At Once was a super creative, unique film and I think it makes for a very deserving Best Picture winner.
I agree. It wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen or anything but it was super creative, the story was solid and had focus, the acting was excellent, and it was FUN and at times thrilling to watch.

I too hated Blue Jasmine, but she was incredible in Tar.

But Streep won for Sophie’s Choice! Which was her peak! This is like if she had won for French Lieutenants woman and then lost for Sophie’s choice because she already had 2 Oscar’s. Thigh maybe that would have been impossible!

I’m so happy for Michelle Yeoh, always excellent but always overlooked.
I remember people saying she should have been nominated for Crazy Rich Asians and I do definitely agree. I'm genuinely beyond thrilled she won tonight. I don't usually get super invested in people winning Oscars, it just ends in sadness generally. But I was so invested in Michelle Yeoh winning and I'm glad she did.

I don't think Academy voters really made this year's decision on best actress based on Woody Allen's reputation. Her having two prior wins AND an obvious respect for EEAAO seem to have been slightly more decisive factors.

Cate has many years of Oscar-worthy performances ahead of her. But I watched her pitch forward when Michelle was announced and I think this one hurt.

Anyone who hasn’t seen Tar should do so even if you could give a fig about classical music.

And Everything is much better than that film about the fish person that won. Godawlmighty that was a mediocre year.

I have not seen EEAAO and can't really figure it out from the clips and the commercials I've seen.

I am a fan of emotional, dramatic, heroic films, so would EEAAO appeal to someone like me?

I just watched Tar last week and it was great (and I don't give a fig about the lives of conductors). IDK if she expected to win, though. All signs pointed to Michelle Yeoh

The only thing I really know about All Quiet was that it took out all the open hetero male affection the original film (a best pic winner) had.
Aha!! This film was panned in Germany because people felt it strayed too far from the book. I read the book in school but I don’t remember it. But it was so well received outside of Germany. I want to read German reaction to Oscar.

Favorite moments: Sarah Polley—loved her since “The Sweet Hereafter” and wanted this win over any other.

Coming to understand that the concept of Wakanda is more than just a film setting to the people involved. The song was a lovely moment.

EEAAO— loved the film, loved the performances, loved the wins.

I'd say Streep wuzrobbed quite a few times ("Silkwood," "A Cry in the Dark," "Bridges of Madison County," "Julie and Julia" "The Devil Wears Prada") before she won her third (and probably final) Oscar for "Iron Lady," which was definitely not the greatest film, but which was 20 years(!!!) after "Sophie's Choice". I guess the Academy should have held out for her turn in "August, Osage County" where she chewed the scenery to toothpicks every bit as much as Blanchett did in "Tar?"

I believe the Academy will recognize Blanchett again, but like Streep they probably won't be in a hurry to dole out a rare third Oscar. 🤷‍♂️

...yes. It is literally, everything everywhere all at once. ;) Meaning it crosses a bunch of genres and has many moments of absurdity and humor, but yes heroism, emotion, and drama too!

It really can't be figured out from the trailers. (My sister got more emotionally into it on a second viewing.) The directors described it as "putting my [immigrant Chinese] mom in the Matrix" and that's the closest you can probably get using another movie as reference. But it's less about the sci-fi than the Matrix and more about the family drama.

Perhaps that's true. Maybe the voters thought Blanchett had enough for now. Or, maybe they looked at Yeoh's body of work and thought she was overdue. Or both. Or maybe Yeoh rode the EEAAO wave. Or, maybe they just preferred Yeoh's performance. I don't have an opinion about who deserved to win, but I'm very happy for Yeoh.
