No it's not normal. It is also not unheard of for elite athletes--or even high school athletes--to die from heart attacks. Even just in skating I can name at least 4 other athletes that have/had heart issues at a relatively young age.
It's unusual, but it definitely happens.
Sudden cardiac death in athletes is usually caused by undiagnosed heart disease. Cardiac screening of young athletes under discussion
My daughter's boyfriend was a big jock in high school and a scholarship athlete in college. One night he was at our house running on our treadmill and started feeling faint. My daughter called 911. The paramedics told him they would take him to the hospital if he wanted to go, but he was a young guy and could probably wait to see his doctor. He decided to go to the hospital (there were some eyerolls behind his back) and walked out to the ambulance--where he collapsed and would have died had he not been in the ambulance when it happened.
He was 24 years old. He had an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. No previous signs. And no, no history of psychiatric drugs

Asymptomatic young people aren't screened for heart problems. Sometimes that doesn't work out.
