Sylvia is actually - and Dylan didn’t want them to use her real name - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suze_Rotolo

Thanks for the clarification - I thought I had heard from a couple of places that Sylvia wasn’t purely one person in real life.

My apologies for leaving this out when I posted my review, but A Complete Unknown is rated R for language. There is some swearing but it’s nowhere near “Deadpool & Wolverine” level. And there are some fist fights and kissing, but I didn’t see any graphic violence, nudity, or sexuality.

I wanted to put that information out there for those who want to be careful about avoiding certain things in entertainment.

No apology necessary. I got bored with a Netflix movie last night, then was watching a YouTube thing then easily distracted I googled who the artist was in the movie, then I ended up googling the girl’s name. That’s the only reason I knew about it lol. I also haven’t seen the movie yet so obviously I don’t know how it plays out too.

Finally saw The Conclave, on my third attempt. First time I changed my mind just as I was about to enter the highway and decided to get gas instead.

Second time I searched for the theatre, ignoring google map’s directions. Couldn’t find it so I drove back home 30 miles.

Today I followed google map and discovered that I was just 2 miles from the theatre when I gave up last week. I finally made it. Since 2019/2020 I had seen just one movie in a theater- Oppenheimer, which I despised.

I am a big screen person. I like to see movies in theaters. This theater was very small and almost full. It felt almost claustrophobic. It took me a while to get used to it and really get into the movie.

I liked the movie overall. It had good production design, direction, cinematography (mostly indoor), acting, but I did not like the final twist (no going to spoil). It would have been a good movie even without it.

I think it will be nominated for BP, best actor, director, and may be a couple more. It is a very well made movie but I don’t think it will win BP or Best actor- talking of Oscars- though I would love to see Ralph Fiennes win it some day. Not going to happen this time. I think Bob Dylon/Tim will win it. Their best chance is for the Director award. A very difficult movie to make, but this team kept me interested throughout. I would like it win the Oscar for sets, costumes, production design and editing.

Why did that actress get a supporting actress nomination for the Globes? It made no sense. Hopefully she won’t get nominated for the Oscar.

Isabella Rossellini? She’s a Hollywood legend.

While, I do think she probably needed one more scene written for her in that movie … it’s not uncommon for actors or actresses with little screen time but have a memorable scene to be nominated for a supporting Oscar, or the main actor Oscar.

There was no memorable scene for her in this movie. Anybody could have done that role. I didn’t agree with Judy Dench’s supporting Oscar either but I always believed it was meant as compensation for not giving her the best actress the previous year. That doesn’t justify the nomination. Rossellini has even less justification for the nomination.

Lol OK. To each their own.

All it takes to get an R rating is to use the F word twice.
Hold onto your britches from what I’m hearing here in Hollywood she is probably one of the five for supporting.

If lead actress wasn’t so competitive this season, Pamela Anderson probably would get in for best actress.
The Academy loves a legacy and Isabella Rossellini comes from one of the greatest international film legacy families a person can from. I haven't seen Conclave I don't have a particular horse in the race of her being nominated at the Oscars. I've read enough to understand why people wouldn't like it but I'm not super invested in any of the other potential nominees yet either (retail job over Christmas means I haven't had time to see Wicked yet) so I'll just wait and see how things play out .

Also Isabella Rossellini is a really good follow on Instagram if one is into following famous people on Instagram. She lives on a farm and posts animal videos sometimes. She went semi viral on Instagram in 2023 because she was eating a salad outside of one of her sheep came and started eating it.

I now have Rossellini as a lock for getting nominations. I didn’t have that one month ago, but it’s clear that the award voters want her. And she’s been campaigning a lot for Conclave. And I’m not convinced that Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) or Grande (Wicked) are a clear favorite to win any of these awards right now.

Best Actress is just insane right now. IMHO, I don’t agree with Gascón (Emilia Pérez) being an apparent lock right now. And I’m Still Here (Torres) and Hard Truths (Jean-Baptiste) aren’t showing in theaters at all in the 🇺🇸 until at least mid January. But apparently, these two women are amazingly good. SIGH. 😔

All it takes to get an R rating is to use the F word twice.

Really? GEESH. 🫤

DH and I watched both Thelma and Kneecap yesterday on netflix. My 30-yr-old son recommended Thelma and said he has watched it 3 times, so it's not just for the older crowd. I don't remember when I laughed so hard watching a movie. June Squibb is 25+ years older than me and I wish I looked as spry as she does. I think we'll be watching it again.

Kneecap was exactly as I had expected from the reviews, sort of a Sing Street on steroids. We both enjoyed it, but couldn't exactly explain why. This isn't my taste in music, but I still enjoyed the scenes where the band performed. There was just enough warmth coming through in rare moments that made you smile. I was intrigued by the discussions about the Irish language and its use in the film. I was not familiar with it at all. Not for those put off by language and sex scenes.

Our plan is to see Wicked on a weekday afternoon next week once the kids are back in school.

I saw thelma in the theaters twice. I liked it so much. I'm sorry it didnt come out a little later to get into some of these award conversations.

I've seen Wicked in the theater 3 times and each time it was full and I don't recall seeing any children in the theater.

Thoughts on Wicked:

Erivo was really good and Grande was terrific. Their friendship felt real and heartfelt. Goldblum was very good, but his part dragged out a little too long. Yeoh was good until her "She is evil" speech at the end, which just sounded petulant and silly (probably more the writers' fault than hers). Some of the musical numbers were great (primarily "What Is This Feeling?"); others were too slick (primarily "Dancing through Life"). The production values were overall pretty strong. The animals were way too CGI-looking, but there was probably no other way to do them. The Menzel and Chenoweth cameos were cute.

On the whole, I found it overlong and a little dull. I never cared for The Wizard of Oz (even though I love Judy Garland); I guess it makes sense that this wouldn't be my thing.

@Wyliefan, it wasn't my thing either, although I generally hate musicals, so there's that. I thought Erivo was 10x better than Grande, though.

I loved Wicked when I saw it today and didn’t really feel it was too long. I was thinking about all the interesting psychological aspects of the story. The way someone is perceived to be evil but then they aren’t really, but they’re traumatized, and so there are reasons, and someone else is perceived to be good and they are actually evil. I know this is oversimplified but I found it interesting to ponder other, similar situations. I’ve just been watching Disclaimer on Apple TV+ and there are some parallels: respected and successful woman, appears nice, but is actually quite evil; man appears to be doing nefarious things and there are reasons for his actions. Just all very interesting to me.

I hate musicals, so those are out.

I am not trying to see all movies before GG. Not that interested in movies anymore. Certainly not the type they fill theatres with.

I like foreign language films that get Oscar/GG nominations .

I had planned on seeing just three movies- one of them -Brutalist- is yet to be released). Then I added two more.

Conclave- done. Well made movie but I didn’t like how it ended.

I want to see The Real Pain. Any opinions for or against?

It is running at just one theatre inthe entire valley. This is the theatre that hosts international film festivals. So I like the theatre, but It is 30-35 miles from me. So I have to decide if it is worth the drive.

The foreign language movie imagine light has only one show in one theatre in the valley (same) and it is at 8 pm. Not going there that late. It may come back if it gets an Oscar nom. Not sure if YouTube will show it with English subtitles.

I am going to wait to see A complete unknown. Theatres must be packed right now. I can see it next week. I don’t care if it wins every GG and every Oscar.

I saw the Brutalist with a Q and A with the director after it. It was really good. I would see it again. I liked A Real Pain but not enough to watch again even at home. @Vash01 You might like the The Seed of the Sacred Fig. I will definitely see it again.

This sounds interesting. Iran has produced some really good movies. I hope to see this.

ETA-
Seed … arriving Jan 3 at a theatre in Scottsdale (it is inside a shopping mall)
Brutalist Arriving Jan 9 at the same in Scottsdale.

I should stay in a hotel in Scottsdale to see good movies. My area shows only awful box office movies. Years earlier (before 2020) I used to drive to Scottsdale to see good foreign language movies.

Just finished watching Memoir of a Snail 🇦🇺 after renting it on Amazon Prime. It has received the Best Animated Film nomination from the major awards shows (Golden Globes, Critics Choice) so far.

My overall rating is 8.0/10. This film is rated R due to the content (some violence, sexuality, and nudity) that’s shown. WOW. If you are sensitive to dark themes and issues regarding mental health and child/foster care abuse, you should probably skip this. The story is told well enough, but it’s……a……lot.

The Wild Robot 🇺🇸 is now available to rent on Prime for $5.99 and I hoping that Flow 🇱🇻 will be available to rent soon. I think after those two films, I’ll be done with the animated category for awards season. 😅

We started Wicked tonight. I kind of forgot that it was super long, so starting it after a very late night probably wasn’t ideal for the kids. Even mr. mic is thoroughly enjoying it. The kids are completely engrossed. Baby mic said that “Glinda should just be a singer, she’s really good at that but she’s a terrible sorceress”

not many people have mentioned Jonathan Bailey’s performance in wicked, I watched him last Christmas and binged all of fellow travelers, I cried so much.

I thought he was very good. I didn't know he could dance and sing. Actually, I thought the cast overall was very good. If people don't like musicals, they won't like it. I enjoyed it very much. I'll definitely see part 2.

ITA. I love "Popular."

I have been misled by Google maps many times, sometimes it even gave me wrong directions to my home when I was less than five miles from it. Of course I knew those directions were wrong. So I use it only when I know nothing about the area/route. I know Scottsdale pretty well. Didn’t think I would need directions. :)

Flow looks to be getting released digitally in Canada on January 7th. Those release dates usually coincide with the States so maybe take a look next week and you'll be able to find out.

I do want to see Flow. I just don't know that I'll get it done next week. We'll see what happens work wise. It doesn't have any dialogue from what I've read which means that I'll have to make sure I can focus on the movie properly with fewer distractions.
