BRONZE for Emily & Ian in Angers! :)
Emily: “ … Tanith texted us before that we should skate for each other and that‘s exactly what we did.“
Ian: “It feels amazing. I feel like ‘oh my god’. I want to remember what our mindset was going into this event because I want to apply it for all our events. We had also a lot of help from our coaches so we really want to thank them. We tried not to think too much about scores and placements because that always puts some extra pressure.”
They will skate next in Estonia at the Tallinn Trophy.
ETA:

Ben Agosto in response to their quotes above: “This is the BEST mindset to have going into competition. Press Save on that feeling, you two. It gets harder to realize as you keep working your way up the ranks, but even more important. Congratulations”

Agosto’s tweet right after they skated: https://x.com/ben_agosto/status/1852772280948170829
BRATTI/SOMERVILLE-USA
Gorgeous. Hypnotic, haunting, romantic. Such soft knee action and powerful flow. Next level emotional connection at this point in the competition. This is how they need to keep skating!

Honestly, given what we've seen from MIDA their first 2.5 seasons so far, I can't think that going elsewhere is necessarily a bad idea...

Are you unhappy with Bratti/Sommerville's medal today? Or just don't care for their programs?

Congrats to Bratti/Somerville - reallly enjoyed their performance (crucial to skate well at this comp) and putting themselves back in the conversation for the world team.
LOL. Not really. Their score here that won bronze in a very weak field is still below CarPon & ZingKol - and it would probably be below GreenP had Michael not been ill at Metropole Nice.

Perhaps, but this was a tough panel and they beat the #6 team from worlds last year. Z/K were unable to beat the Taschler’s (#15 at worlds, likely would have been around 10th without their mistake in the RD). The judging in the RD seemed to suggest that the judges really like B/S. I’m not making any predictions about nationals for the 2nd half of the season, but I think it’s reasonable to say that they are in the conversation.

Everyone knows Car Pon is US #2. We are
talking about US #3.
And we all thought G/P was #3 last season until they aren’t. As today gp results show
It only takes an off day for the perceived pecking order to be changed. So those are close in scores they are only one lift or swizzle mistake apart from each other.

I think it’s a little wild to say they’re not in the conversation when they were third last year and they just won a Grand Prix medal which the other teams haven’t done.

No one is saying they are suddenly the favorites now. But I think they’re in the conversation.

Sure, I agree that CarPon seem settled in as US #2, though 2 years ago, GreenP seemed to have a solid hold on that spot, so anything can change between these teams. GreenP were, going into last season, very clearly US #2 - they were a seeded GP team - then they had bad material and injury and dropped behind CarPon.

ReedAmbru are, arguably, the weakest #6 team in recent years - and many of us here would have had them behind both CarPon and LopBri at Worlds last year, so I don't think it's any remarkable feat that BraSom beat them.

I'm not saying that BraSom are no good and have no future - this medal is, to me, similar to CarPon's bronze at Cup of Russia/Rostelecom Cup several years ago - right place, right time to benefit from other teams delivering weaker material.

I said this in the US Women's thread, or something similar, and perhaps it needs to be more clearly understood... Placement matters less than points on the USFS' revised ISU Championships Selection Pool Criteria. I don't know that the points/scores will be a final determinant if three or four teams with close scores through the fall internationals wind up 2-5 - the USFS seemed pretty willing to just follow the results of Nats last year in the end when selecting the Worlds team, but if BraSom wind up 3rd and only a few tenths or hundredths ahead of one of those other teams and those others have outscored them during the fall, then I think BraSom have demonstrated just enough inconsistency between both Worlds and SCI this year that they're looking at a 1st Alternate spot - maybe the USFS gives them 4CCs as a consolation prize over the 4th place team that's getting Worlds instead.

Just for reference - here's what the USFS ISU Championships Selection Pool table currently looks like (X = assigned Int'l)

Very interested in seeing how the rest of the GP plays out. The teams know that spot #3 is in play, which sometimes leads to more mistakes. I was surprised today to see the usually unflappable Pate/Bye make a mistake. And many of these teams still to skate 1-2 GPs have at least some history of inconsistency. My guess is that the teams will sort themselves into tiers of true contenders v. longshots, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if we see some more mixed results between a team’s 2 GP events.

I said in the conversation (without it they wouldn’t), not that they will be there. Plus, it’s a long way to Nationals. I wish you would let others have their point of view without the attitude of superiority. It’s getting tiring.

I think your table does not reflect how USFS is determining "average" scores when there is a score from only one GP/JGP or only one Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International. USFS document says:
JGP/GP Average Score:
Average score with a factor of 1.25 (if athlete/team has only one event in this category 80% of their first event score will be added to the second event column to determine an average)
Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International Average:
Average score with a factor of .75 (if athlete/team has only one event in this category 80% of their first event score will be added to the second event column to determine an average)
For example, for Morozov/Chen:
The column for GP/JGP 2 should be 133.38 (80% of 166.73).
And the column for GP/JGP Average should be 150.06.

Also I wonder whether Lake Placid International scores should be categorized as Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International instead of NQS?
For example, for the Browns, I wonder whether their 186.01 from Lake Placid Ice Dance International belongs in the column for Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International 2 instead of the column for NQS?
ETA:
I see that in the case of Pham/Spiridonov, you did categorize their Lake Placid International score of 155.86 as Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International. Maybe the inconsistency is accidental??
For Morozov/Chen, you counted their LPIDI score of 163.74 twice, both as Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International and as NQS.

(BTW, the USFS document also says:
If an athlete/team does not have a score for a JGP/GP/Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International, 80% of an average score will be added to the column without data. Example:
- If an athlete/team competes at a JGP/GP, but not at a Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International, 80% of the average score of the JGP/GP will be entered into the highest and average score for the Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International columns.
So not that it really matters, but Chock/Bates -- who will not be dependent on “Calculation of Overall Athlete Performance Data" for consideration for the World team anyway -- will end up with numbers in the columns for Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International highest and average, even though they do not have any actual result from Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International.)

I didn't notice that. That's an easily correction to the table and I'll get that done this morning. :)

For Morozov/Chen, you counted their LPIDI score of 163.74 twice, both as Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International and as NQS.

LPIDI is supposed to be just in the NQS since the USFS designated it as a NQS competition and it is very clearly not on their list of approved Int'ld that count toward Byes. If it was to go anywhere but NQS, it maybe could go in the non-USFS funded int'l column, but NQS scores have a higher factor, so my intent was to put them all in the NQS column. I tried to take those scores out of the Sr/Jr B column but I may have missed some, so I'll review the teams that were there again and make sure the data has been input correctly.

(BTW, the USFS document also says:
If an athlete/team does not have a score for a JGP/GP/Challenger Series/Senior B/Junior International, 80% of an average score will be added to the column without data. Example:

Good catch. I'll go back and edit. You're right, it definitely wasn't going to affect a team like ChoBat but it could affect other teams.

I appreciate having another set of eyes go over my work so that we have the best/most accurate information possible!

I said this in the US Women's thread, or something similar, and perhaps it needs to be more clearly understood... Placement matters less than points on the USFS' revised ISU Championships Selection Pool Criteria.

I don't think the issue is that people don't understand. I think the issue is that you are focusing on the ISU Championship Selection Pool Criteria, which are used to determine who is in the conversation, but are not the conversation. Nothing restricts the committee from taking placement into account in that conversation.

No, I understand that. What I'm saying is that I think the scores themselves are telling a different story than some of you want to believe based upon placements/medals.

I go back to 2018 Rostelecom Cup where CarPon won a surprise bronze. They still wound up 5th at Nats behind HubDon, ChoBat, HawBak, and McNamara/Carpenter (who also had a surprise bronze at one of their GPs). If ZingKol had been assigned to GPdF, they would have won silver with their SCI score. Sure, it's nice that BraSom had a nice comeback from SCI and they won bronze at GPdF with a score that would have placed 5th at SkAm and 6th at SCI.

Part of why the USFS has shifted the BOW to utilize score over placement is precisely because the strength of field does vary from event to event. @tony has been remarking in the GP pbp threads about how pleased he is with the dance scoring this season - the judges & tech panels seem to have gotten some really good training during the off-season that has improved scoring and made it much more consistent overall. That makes it a lot easier to compare scores across events, especially GP scores for the teams in the mix.

A lot of people are acting like BraSom's surprise GPdF surprise bronze is going to move them higher up the pecking order in the conversation the Int'l Committee has to determine ISU Championship assignments. I maintain that it will NOT because their scores themselves are still lower than a team like ZingKol. At best, it maybe moves them into a part of the "let the chips fall where they may" group of teams vying for the 2-5 placements at Nats along with CarPon, ZingKol and GreenP.

We'll see.

This is exactly what people are saying.
No, people are saying it WILL. I am saying it MAY - and that is dependent on how the other teams score at their GPs.

My gut instinct, having seen all four teams' material - BraSom are a step behind ZingKol who may or may not be even with GreenP and CarPon are a step ahead of the rest.

I know a lot of people didn't care for what they saw out of GreenP at Trophee Metropole Nice, especially their FD. Personally, I really liked it - and so did the judges - who placed it 1st ahead of ReedAmbru despite both teams having some errors and coming back from injury. I think it's better than ZingKol, and I think their RD is also better than ZingKol. I'm looking forward to seeing them skate it clean, hopefully, next week.

But, again, there's still 3 GPs and 3 Challengers left, so there's plenty of additional information yet to be factored in.
