Saturday’s winners:

Novice Pairs - Remie Muramoto / Keith Lau (Canadian Ice Academy, ON). Their FP: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8s4giw?start=3350 Fun fact, Keith comes from the same club in Winnipeg as Kemp/Elizarov. :)

Pre-Novice Pairs - Jaslynn Wong / Nico Conforti (Connaught SC, BC/YK). Their FP: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8s4bo4?start=6002 KMT’s 1st win as a coach I believe. Other coaches with skaters in this event were Michael Marinaro and Katia Gordeeva. Katia’s little team was particularly adorable 😍, will post links to their programs later when I have a few minutes.

The final flight of Novice Women should be skating in Rink 1 this afternoon at around 2:30ish ET (could run ahead or behind however). Besides Lia Cho, a couple of other skaters I’ll be watching for are Nathalie Yonemori also from the Glencoe Club and coached by Scott Davis (fairly clean 3loop-2toe combo in the SP) and Ksenia Krouzkevitch from the Canadian Ice Academy (decent 3lutz-2toe combo and credible 3flip attempt in the SP).

Korea should find a Korean anscestor for one of Muramoto/Lau, because they are a Pair short of being a contender for an Olympic Team medal. And there are Pairs competing with their current tech content.

I think she's probably too young (competed STAR 5 U10 last season, so she's probably between 10 & 11 years old).

Sunday’s winners:

Novice Women - Lia Cho, Glencoe Club, AB. Lia’s FP: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8s5ak6?start=21991 Not as mind-blowing as her SP (3rd in the FP), but still an amazing performance for an 11 year old*.

Also worth watching (@danafan take note :D) are 12 year old* Ksenia Krouzkevitch from the Canadian Ice Academy, ON who finished 1st in the FP: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8s5ak6?start=20728 and Sandrine Blais from Sherbrooke, QC who finished 2nd in the FP and overall: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8s5ak6?start=21202

*Based on ages listed in the 2023 Canada Winter Games biographies

Pre-Novice Men - Tobias Liu, York Region Skating Centre, ON. Tobias’ FP: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8s5bdi?start=19400 Make sure to watch until the score comes up, his reaction is the sweetest! 🥲

The 3 top skaters all had FP scores within a point (99). Good to see some real competition at Novice level and all 3 with successful 3Z (Lia and Ksenia also with 3F; Sandrine didn't have a flip in her program)

Sandrine Blais moved into the lead with a triple toe triple toe combo, slightly ahead of Ksenia.

11 year old Lia Cho opened with a beautiful triple lutz triple toe, followed by triple flip and double axel in footwork. Level 3 spins and level 2 step sequence, lovely presentation, this will easily lead. Gosh I love her coach Scott Davis, he is so nice. He was the primary coach at YOG and all the kids loved him. Score 54.4!

OMG! Lia Cho is my new favorite Canadian lady discovery, what a star so much grace, but with personality plus, enormous talent. Fingers crossed that she will continue safe and healthy, in the sport. I have not been so excited by a novice skater in many, many, many years. Just a delight to watch!
