Beck's jumps: Ripp3Lz+3T, 2A with good distance, 3S nice flow out, ditto 3Lo, taking his time to breathe, 3F+2T, 3Lz bit wobbly, 3F+2A opened up early & fell. :(

ETA: His choreo sequence didn't have the same impact, IMO, as his glorious FS in Linz, but I'm glad to see him give it his all emotionally! :)

Nice 3z-3t to start, soft landings, fall on 3f-1a sequence, not a whole lot of technical content here, but he's doing the inverse of Appleby--skate conservatively to try to hold that medal, nice musical sensitivity and artistic expression. There's not a lot of room for him on the American senior scene without a 3a, but glad we got to see him as a junior.

Probably not enough to make the JGPF for Beck - depends on how Daniel Martynov does next week.

He's currently the sixth qualifier, but yeah, the Armenia field is really shallow, so Martynov will almost certainly pass him by. Nakamura will medal there regardless of whether he has one of his trademark meltdowns or not (but has no chances for the JGPF), and I can't even come up with a third guy to put on the podium beside them when I look at the entry list. The Korean boy has much weaker domestic results compared to Seo (RIP my sweet prince... you need to medal at Junior Worlds now), Kim, Lim and Lee and I think the second American boy also has modest PBs.

Martynov is in if he wins - if he finishes 2nd then it will come down to the tiebreaker which is combined total scores from both events. Nakamura is out regardless of where he places thanks to his paltry 3 points from his first JGP.

There's like 6 guys who could mess with the medals but aren't likely to finish with more than bronze - David Li, Fedir Kulish, Tamir Kuperman, Oleg Melnikov, Shohei Law & Aleksandr Fegan.

One thing I liked about Strommer is his reliability. 95% of what he does in practise he does when it counts. So tired of American skaters who are lovely or have great elements but can`t put it all togeather. Want to see what Strommer comes up with next. The commentators were noting how big some of the jumps are. I wouldn`t count him out yet.

Oh, I didn't realise Martynov had to win. That does introduce some intrigue, but I think he's the strong favourite for it... Nakamura is as inconsistent as he is talented.

It would be great if he can successfully add the content. :)

OTOH, I don't know how much credit I would give him for consistency vis-a-vis his American rivals when he's not attempting even a 3a. The psychology of the program is very different when attempting the harder jumps. There have been several American men who were consistent until they tried to add a 3a or quad and everything went downhill from there.

Yudong Chen is really an excellent all around skater who could win if he could ever skate clean. But as it stands he is a team train wreck leader, unfortunately. Unbelievable that his coach did not stop him. The Chinese coaches seem really stern and unforgiving. Skating is so hard to do when you are uptight. Noticed that with the junior ladies coaches from China too.

Beck Strommer is my new U.S. man to uber ❤️ Those jump landing positions….and the height and distance! Gorgeous camel positions. Speed. Edges. Mark called him a skater‘s skater in the short program. I’m already ubering Samuel Mindra who is without a triple axel too. Beck jumps so high it would seem he should be able to add that jump plus more. Hope he gets in there and works for them with Viktor.

Congrats to the Korean gold medalist. He did not crumble at all under the pressure. Though I didn’t care for his skating, the coaches reaction with him in the K&C melted my heart.

Also I was hoping there might be room for both Strommer and Martynov in the GPF. Hate to think it could come down to a tiebreak between them.

Strommer`s team includes elements he`s likely to execute in competition which is the way skating used to be. Before IJS being messy on a couple jumps and your technical score could go from 5.7 to 4.8 or 5.2. Now judges accept all kinds of sloppiness in the quad jumps as near or fully executed. 3 turns in combinations, bent over landings, standstills where flows ought to be, etc. I agree when you`re including elements you can do only on your best days the psychology is different.

I follow diving and there the judging is correct and harsh. If there is anything wrong with the dive you don`t get a 9.5 you`re down in the 6`s. Then it`s easier to distinguish the truly great athletes from the pretty good ones..

It would be great if he [Strommer] can successfully add the content.

One example is Lucas Broussard who won 2 JGP golds last year without attempting 3A (since he was recovering from injury and missed the U.S. Junior Team Cup in July 2022). He landed 3A cleanly to win the SP at the JGP Final (3Aq in his 3rd place FS) which helped him win the silver. He's still trying to get his 3A consistent in competition and has added 4T this season (eta: actually, starting at 2023 Nationals in San Jose where he landed his first-ever 4T in competition on his first try in the FS but fell out of 3A (only mistake) ... then came his tough Junior Worlds FS :() and learning how to compete with harder technical content, as seen at his CS debut at Nebelhorn Trophy.

Edited to add more info since I’m kind of the resident Lucas “expert”/fact person. ;)
